Conductor with hearing aids...?

Hi Guys.

I applied for a Northern Rail Trainee Conductor job. I already passed my both maths and reading assessments and waiting for interview and medicals. I know the medical tests including a hearing tests and that's is why I am asking. Is it any chance to pass it if I am deaf on one ear and a bit on the second one? I am wearing a hearing aids on both sides and have absolutely no problems with any communication or hearing, as the aids works perfect for me... I am wondering if this will not disqualify me automatically and would like to know if anybody knows what the chances are to get the job...

Yeah of course. All I'm saying is I dont know the ruling on people entering with pre installed ones

Hi Piotr, I wear two hearing aids. I recently passed my medical to become a signaller, I can't imagine the medical is that different but I could be wrong. I didn't pass the hearing test part of the medical as you have to do it without your hearing aids, however I was tested on how good my communication was without having them in, and I was also assessed by a railway doctor from the medical company to see if I could understand what was being said on the phone without them in. I have mild-moderate hearing loss and have done since I was born. It's worth dropping HR an email and asking what the boundaries are for the hearing levels required for being a conductor.

Non lineside SB signallers medical standards are very different to PTS standard, we have a guy with only one eye and many with hearing issues.

I suspect unfortunately having been a guard, a aid isn’t permitted - although it really depends on your ability to meet the standard in the booth.

Why would wearing a hearing aid be treated any differently to wearing glasses? Both are artificial aids to correct a deficiency
