Conductor Training

Been looking at the forum for a week or so and there is loads of information but just a quick question really...


Just got word that I am on a counductor course for Northern in september and just wondering what sort of stuff to expect for the training course and wondering if anyone else is also on the course?

I passed my assessments for Skipton conductor post nine weeks ago and have been on hold ever since, also, what date is the course?

Hi there

I don't work for Northern but I am a guard for another Train Operating Company, so hopefully I can give you an idea of what to expect. Core training normally takes three months, so after your corporate welcome you can expect to be doing rules for nearly half of that (it can be quite interest if you have an interest in the railways ), you also have to do your Personal Track Safety (PTS) course that makes you a compentant person to go trackside should the need arise to during the course of your duties. There is also traction training to consider (Northern operate a wide variety of rolling stock and each type can be very different and you will need to know to how each one works).

You'll also have your route learning and commercial training to undertake though I am not sure in what order you will do this with Northern. That's only really a taster as you do really have a lot to cram in a relatively short period, but do enjoy it. I found my course to be a great deal of fun.

Hi Andrew, its based at Piccadilly and believe its 16th September if I remember rightly!

And thanks Monty, I'm an internal applicant so have my PTS etc already so shouldn't be too much that but good to get a bit of an insight in general as to how it works.

What sort if stuff do you need to learn for route knowledge? Is it locations of stations etc etc or is there more to it than that?

I had a call yesterday telling me I had been successful and offered a position and would be on the course starting on 16th Sept, providing I pass the medical that is.
So all being well I will see you there.

Yeah I got the same the other day when I spoke to them so should be good! Can't wait to get cracking now but should come quick enough!

Are you internal or external? Seemed to be quite a good mix when I had my assessment the other week.

I'm external. I think there were only a couple of internal on my assessment.
Just need to get the medical out of the way now though.

I have passed the conductor assessment and been progressed to next recruitment stage (medical) Does this mean I have been accepted???
Were any of the above folk at the assessment at Piccadilly on Wednesday 7 August?
I was really hoping to have started on 16 September course but as I haven't heard anything and the people above have, it doesn't look very hopeful. Any insights, people?

I wouldn't have thought that they would go through the hassle of putting you through a medical if they didn't want to take you on.

What does it say on your application status on your northern account.

I took an assessment in June for one of three Skipton post and passed it but I haven't progressed to the medical stage like you have, it says on hold following successful conductor assessment.

Unsure if I'm going to get a position or not, all I know is that only one of the three successful candidates went on the last course because I think there was only one space left.

I applied for Manchester Piccadilly and had my assessment on the 7th Aug in Manchester. I got a call today saying I was being offered a place on the 30th Sept, but at Victoria. Bit gutted as I would have much preferred Piccadilly but obviously couldn't turn it down!

What do you mean? They will send you anything you need in addition to searching these forums..I cant really send you anything..

My application status on the Northen rail site states I have been "progressed to next recruitment stage (medical)"
Is that better or worse than being on hold? My current employer expects a months notice so if I were to get on 16 September course, I would be cutting it fine, even with what annual leave I have left!
Anticipation is killing me!

Its better, one stage further than mine.

Some people are been called this week to go on course starting 30th September so keep believing

Most Northern conductors pray for a 150 on a Saturday night so they don't have to venture into the saloon for door opening duties.
