Conductor attempts

Do thse wishing to become conductors only get two attempts at the assessment stage? Unlike the driver role this dosen't include the interview?

I was wondering about this though as I have heard people say you can have more than two attempts depending

Yes and it is the same as the drivers in that you are only allowed 2 attempts, plus the Criteria Based Interview (CBI) is part of the assessment but the manager interview is not.

I have heard from a reliable source that the rules governing the CBI are to be changed at some point. He didnt go into detail or give time scales but he said that it's "likely" that the rules will be relaxed so that it's more reccomendation based rather than the current, you fail it you can't be a driver setup. Ie if you fail the CBI the TOC has the discretion to still take you on.

Make of that what you will but obviously this isn't official.

Can't speak for other TOCs but South West Trains allow applicants to sit the assessments more than twice.

Perhaps I should have said driver or guard but was it not your post directly before mine that mentioned the assessment format is the same for drivers?

I did think Southern allow you to retake it at least the interviews.

Am I right the ticket selling test and role play are totally different to the station (gateline, ticket office) tests?

The ticket Selling Test is done on a moving train as it were and there is an added checking test. Quite surprised the latter is not done on the Gateline Test as most of them check tickets??

I wouldn't think you can have only two attempts at the tests.
I know people who have sat the same tests for four or five different TOC's over a number of years and they had no problem being appointed.

You can take the tests as many times as you like, you can only fail the tests twice.
The manager interview is not part of the core tests.

And by fail you mean any part of the test? If you fail on one part or fail the whole thing you equally have one chance to take it again?

The ones where you have to read a paragraph and answer questions, ticket selling, Janey Hill and all that, plus the Beep, Honk and a "Ready to Depart" tests... there is no fail mark as you can make mistakes. The pass rate is on how many questions you got right.

There certainly isn't a maximum amount of times you can take the test to be a Conductor. If you pass every time but are unsuccessful at interview you could take the tests 100 times.

I don't think there is an official number of times you are allowed to fail the test either - not like with the Drivers test.

Must differ amongst TOCs then? Maybe if you keep failing the same test they won't allow you to retake as obvious you don't have the competency anyway?

There is an official database; the same as the Drivers tests; which says if you have passed or failed. if you pass the conductor tests, but don't get a job; That pass is valid for 5 years. Each TOC may or may not add or take away their own little element to the tests, which can be done as many times as you like. i.e. Northern don't do the role play any more; but still First do.

If you fail the test; you can't re-take the test for another 6 months as well.
