i assume this will mean upon satisfactory references , medical etc?

Correct, I also think it includes a CRB check too. The job is yours virtually unless they find anything that would disqualify you, ie health issues or criminal record etc. well done by the way for getting the job, it's not any easy thing to do at the best of times let alone in this job climate. What TOC and job did you apply for by the way?

Its a trainee train driver role with Scotrail. I initially applied in Feb this year and it all went quiet, until the last 2 weeks its been a bit of a whirlwind to be honest.
Woke up this morning after the interview yesterday and i have an email with the offer.
Im over the moon, its been a tuff couple of weeks, but hopefully i can pass the last couple of tests etc.
Been in my current job for 20 years and its gonna be wierd to put in my notice..

I was in first thing mate yesterday at 09.30, on assesment day i was on the far left of the room 2nd row from front.

smallish, short hair and rimless glasses...
