Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum and was hoping that someone else has been in this situation.
I have been given a conditional offer of employment for First Scotrail and barring a disaster with my medical which I have had or my disclosure check (pending) there shouldn't be any problem with my references. Question is, I am beginning to doubt if there is actually a job there. Have I got a post if I am being offered it conditionally? If so, what is the typical start date from the offer date?
Any help would be appreciated very much. And BTW, it's not a train drivers job!

You are offered a job 'conditionally' on the basis that you pass your medical, CRB and usually two references, if all this comes through then you will get a start date.

There is no typical start date, it varies TOC to TOC and how quickly they process the references etc, perhaps one or two weeks.

You haven't got a job until you have passed everything, especially the medical & associated drug & alcohol screen.

If First are going to shell out for you to attend the above, then there is definitely a job there. However, you've not got new job, until that contract comes through your letterbox. If they have asked you to go for a medical, sounds encouraging.

Best of luck!

Cheers guys,
The reason I'm a wee bit concerned is I've heard, especially with drivers, that the conditional offer is there but there's actually no job!
I'll just need to sweat it out!

Drivers are different as they have to wait for a training course which might not be that frequent. Same for a few other roles. What role have you gone for?

Engineer in the maintenance side. The job looks brilliant and I've already told my current boss I'm expecting to leave, which he's ok about. Wouldn't like to eat humble pie though!

Once you have passed all of the checks that need to be done you should receive an unconditional offer of employment, a start date, or a contract.

You can't be offered an unconditional job because you may fail a medical etc etc.

A medical at Bupa is not cheap so they wouldn't be sending you if there was no job.

Indeed. The whole process is somewhat costly, and they wouldn't undertake it without good reason!

I have attended & passed a medical for a Drivers position back in Dec 2009 and did not get it!
Not having a rant (as I think I'm better off now anyway than I would if I got that job) but just saying that a knockback can happen even after passing a medical.

From reports in this forum, there does seem to be a higher number of Driver applicants that are told they have been accepted but no job appears, than for other vacancies.

Thanks Bev, a fellow pessimist! I won't believe I've got the job until I walk into the depot on my first day.

I prefer to be pessimistic - if I am wrong I am pleasantly surprised, whereas if I was optimistic and I was wrong I would probably be devastated!

Seriously, though, I'm sure there is a far greater chance that you will start as opposed to the offer being withdrawn, especially as you have not gone for a driving job.

Cheers Greenback!

excellant mate, are you a tradesman or are they training you ?

It's a semi skilled post Scott, but I've got quite a few years experience on the railway in the technical side. I suppose there will be lots of on the job learning if I get it!

Which company and what role is this for. Congratulations by the way. The reason I ask is that I start as trainee conductor with LM next week and I saw you posted on that thread recently as well.
