I have checked "my score"

Processor 4.7(Intel(r)Pentium(r)CPU T2330@1.60GHZ
Memory 4.2 (1.0GB)
Graphics 2.3 (Mobile Intel (r) 965 Express Chipset Family
Gaming Graphics 3.0 (251mb Total available graphics memory)
Primary Hard Disk 5.1 30 GB Free (73GB Total)

Overall score 2.3

Whatever all this means I am not in the slightest bit interested in Computer Games or intend to play them...

Help

OK, so here's my score, what do the techies here think of this?
And why does my laptop take up to 15 minutes to start from cold and get up to a working state where commands are not met with the spinning disc for 5 minutes?

Processor AMD Sempron(tm) SI-42 4.1 3.5
Determined by lowest subscore

Memory (RAM) 2.00 GB 4.6
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G 3.5
Gaming graphics 895 MB Total available graphics memory 3.9
Primary hard disk 62GB Free (139GB Total) 5.3

Overall Score 3.2

SteveP29 I suspect your slow startup time isn't caused by your hardware as much as you having a load of cruft installed such as those programs that hide away by the system clock in the taskbar, each of which takes time to load on bootup.

You could also defragment your disk and consider adding more RAM

I would also recommend running CCleaner to clear out all the unneeded temporary files.

Well, I have to say thank you to everyone.

I ran CCleaner and then WIPE.

Booted up this morning and I was ready to go in around 5 minutes.

Marvellous!
I did actually go into the local computer shop and ask about speeding it up, and they recommended doing a Windows re-installation (£45)

I don't think I need that now!

Next problem, anyone know how to get rid of the Startpins search engine. If you're not familiar with it, the Mozilla forums tell me that it is likely to be a 'stealth toolbar' I don't like fiddling with the registry etc so I'd appreciate any knowledge of how to do it without having to jeopardise my laptop.

Steve - go back a few pages and follow the instructions there - should speed it up a lot more and also Malwarebytes should get rid of startpins - seems its a browser redirect so you must have downloaded something and thats come with it.

If your still not having any luck getting rid we can try something else.

In addition to other suggestions, try a registry cleaner. Installing and removing software inserts lots of surplus entries in the Windows Registry, and this can also make computers run slowly (or increase boot time). Some of this software is free, others is shareware, or asks for donations if you find the software useful. One example of the latter is TweakNow, but there are others if you do a google search.

http://www.tweaknow.com/RegCleaner.php

The suggestion about removing temporary files is good - before I set my browser options to "delete browser history on exit" (Firefox or Internet Explorer), I was getting a build up of thousands of temporary files that sometimes slowed the affected computer to a crawl. I use Norton Utilities, which came free, bundled with their Internet Security package, and that contains options to clean the registry and to remove unnecessary files (.tmp, etc.) Norton Internet Security runs fairly quickly with my 2Gb of memory on a 3 year old computer (Windows 7).

Ccleaner has a registry clean option on the side. Ask it to sxcan first then fix all issues. Up to you if you want to back up what it finds before you fix it but I've never bothered and not had issues.

Probably a very week 3G signal.

I had an O2 stick once and I couldn't get any more than GPRS speed out of despite what the coverage maps said, so I went and bought a T-mibile one instead and was whizzing along.

Thanks the last one I had was Vodaphone and it was better, I selected the
O2 one purely on price !!

and I though is was 'Three' stuff that people buy because it's cheap and then discover they can't get a signal. ;)

Would computer speeds be improved if there were no adverts ? - if so can I have the BBC version

If we pay a subscription to an ISP why do we have to put up with these ?

You don't - install an ad blocker (but don't use it on these forums ;)).

But you are misunderstanding the pricing model - you pay the ISP to connect to the internet; those providing the content pay have to pay to serve up what you see, usually by advertising or by selling you a product or service.

As an example, railforums.co.uk will get no money from your ISP. But someone has to pay for the server space so we can read it.

In my experience, three has probably the best 3g signal. I found O2 particularly disappointing, even in major cities.

I think most 3g dongles can be unlocked (possibly for a small fee), then you can use whichever operator gives you the best signal.

Three has a reputation for bad signal but IMO I only lose signal when I'm on a train in the middle of nowhere (around Leighton Buzzard on the WCML and somewhere on SWT near Haslemere)!

Three has the best 3G signal with the most sites (it shares its network with EE) and the fastest backhaul, which it doesn't share*. It also has the most DC-HSPA sites, offering speeds of up to 42 megabits.

What Three doesn't now have is any fall back to 2G (except in a few locations) but there shouldn't be many places that aren't 3G and as a heavy data user, 2G speeds are so awful as to be useless!

O2 has the least 3G cells but does have some 3G sites at 900MHz which can work better indoors. However I often find my O2 SIM stuck on 2G (EDGE) which sucks - see above.

* Apparently while Orange merges some of its old 3G cells in, Three is forced to use Orange's slow network until it can add its own data links. But that's not Three's fault.

CCleaner worked well and cleared a lot of crap
Wipe did much the same.

Every time I run a full scan with Malware Bytes, it blue screen of death's my laptop. I've had this laptop coming up 4 years and up until I ran Malware Bytes, I'd NEVER had a blue screen of death. It works OK if I run a quick scan.

Since lots of people are taking an interest in this topic, I might provide an explanation on the relationship between the amount of RAM and the computer's perceived speed.

There are (roughly) two purposes of RAM in a modern operating system:
1. Storing the instructions and data of loaded applications
2. Storing copies of files that have been recently accessed (a cache), ie a duplicate of what's on the hard drive.

If a computer doesn't have enough RAM for purpose 1, it will use the hard drive to store the extra data and swap data between the RAM and hard drive based on when it's being accessed. This will typically result in the computer running very slugglishly (10 times slower) when a new application is loaded or when switching between applications, as data is swapped between the disk and RAM (causing a large and often audible amount of hard drive activity). Once this has occured, the computer will run smoothly again. In some cases, it may permanently be exceedingly slow if there's never a point at which it can operate without swapping data between the RAM and hard drive. Increasing the amount of available RAM will stop the computer running slugglishly under these circumstances.

If a computer has more than enough RAM for purpose 1, but not for purposes 1 and 2, it may occasionally run slugglishly, but not often. This will be in circumstances when the data used for purpose 1 has been copied to the hard drive to free memory for purpose two*. Increasing the amount of available RAM will result in a relatively small speed boost, as it will prevent these circumstances and allow for more hard drive data to be cached.

If the computer has enough RAM for both purposes, adding additional RAM will have no speed benefit. If your computer is slow loading applications and opening files but otherwise instant, get a fast hard drive such as an SSD. Otherwise, time for a new machine.

As an example, my curreny computer has 8GB of RAM. It is using 1.4 Gb for purpose 1, with about 5 applications open (on linux, I'm sure windows would require double ;)), and 2.7 Gb for cache. So having more RAM would provide no speed boost. 2Gb would be sufficient, and more than 4Gb is superflous, though it means it's future proof. It has an SSD and an HDD, which applications stored on the SSD for quick loading, with personal files and content that changes a lot on the HDD (for unix users, \var and \home are on the HDD and the rest are on the SSD).

* One might ask why the computer doesn't store all of the data for purpose 1 in RAM and use anything spare for caching. Actually, this is probaby what would happen if you were going between applications frequently, but if not, the operating system will copy some of the data used for purpose 1 to the disk and use the memory saved for caching. The reason is, the memory used for caching is a copy of what's on the hard drive, so it can be deleted from RAM in a second if RAM is needed for pupose 1, rather than having to copy that to the disk first.

TLDR - if your computer frequently performs slugglishly, particularly when switching between applications, more memory would provide a large speed boost. Otherwise, it will have a small or no speed boost at all. Upgrade something else instead.

After adding RAM, SSD storage is the next big upgrade - and can actually make more of a difference than getting a new computer with a faster processor. My dual-core MacBook Air can often do things quicker than my quad-core iMac, simply as there's no comparison between a regular HDD and SSD.

Like using the HDD for virtual memory, the other big delay is loading applications and reading/writing data - not a heavy demand on the processor and all down to your hard drive.

I'd guess that many fairly new computers are still not pushed to their limits very often, just as most smartphones and tablets offer more power than is ever called upon it from the apps and games people actually use. But if they don't have enough RAM, those slow hard drives will make a massive impact - and on smartphones/tablets, you don't have hard drives but you can discover that the speed of the flash storage can vary quite a bit.

A faster processor is most important when you're doing very processor intensive tasks, such as encoding a 1080p HD video.. but most people probably aren't doing that, and if they're simply web browsing and maybe playing HD video or games, the GPU is going to do a lot of that work.

But, again, to repeat what Nick W posted - making sure you have enough RAM is the very first thing to do.

That shouldnt happen and leads me to think there may be a root problem going on there.

Did the quick scan bring up anything? And do you remember what the BSOD was about or was it too quick?

Did you use startuplite and has that sped up your PC at all?

There is something else to try but need to exhaust all the other options first.

Would you advise me to delete MS Security Essentials? I've already got rid of my old anti-spyware programme.

Personally, I would keep MSE, as it's not a resource hog (some AV and spy/malware programs are), and pretty good.

I just ran a quick scan on Malware Bytes again and it BSOD again. It did it last night on a quick scan too, but I thought I was mistaken about it and had asked for a full scan. Not sure why it did that.
When I ran Startuplite, I got this message:
Error.jpg

It gave the same error for all 4 processes that it was going to disable

Although it did say that it was successful and would take effect on the next restart. Not sure if it was actually any quicker when restarting after the BSOD, than I'd made it after running Wipe and CCleaner (maybe that was just the result of it recovering from the BSOD)

My guess is that one of two following applies:
  1. The application didn't have the rights to alter the registry (are you logged in as an administrator?)
  2. The registry is corrupt - if this is the case, I think the only solution on Windows is re-installation?

I primarily use 3 for mobile internet, using a 3GB/90-day SIM available from eBay/Amazon (about £11) and replacing it when the data expires. I also have an original Vodafone PAYG mobile internet SIM which doesn't expire as backup, for use where there is no 3 reception but there is Vodafone 3G/2G. I find these days, however, that I hardly ever use the Vodafone SIM as the 3 coverage is sufficient for the places I go.

The main exception is Virgin Pendolino trains where 3 hardly works and Vodafone seems to work better. There are notices on those trains saying that the mobile signal is boosted with logos for the 4 main networks (i.e. excluding 3). Would that explain why the 3 reception is so poor on the Pendolinos?

I use both SIMs in an unlocked 3-branded Mifi device.

There is a program called blue screen view (http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html) that should be able to list all BSoD's you have had and give you the diagnostic code which you can look up via google unless I remember a particularly good site that lists them.

This should inform as to where the problem is but not necessarily the solution.

One way to test would be to manually find the keys in the registry in regedit and see if you can change them there.

At this stage I wouldnt do a reformat of your PC unless you really want to - back up everything you cherish though.

If you do a fresh install of MBAM then it fails again(remember to update it first after install) then try Hijack this

DO NOT ALTER ANYTHING YOURSELF when you have run this scan. I can not emphasise this enough to anyone who does this. Most of you will not need to use this tool unless you have severe problems so please DO NOT use this tool unless you are really having major issues that we cannot sort out before using this tool.

I am only suggesting it as Steve seems to have some root issues which may or may not be able to fix but with help they probably can.

Steve, dont post the log on here as it will be big and full of garbage to us all. Use Bleeping computer forums and they will look at it and ask you to fix certain items including registry and stuff like that.

This should get to the bottom of it. If not then you may just have to do a full reformat or spend a couple of quid on a new lappy
