Computer Help Required - E-Mail

I currently have an e-mail address @btinternet.com even though I am with Virgin Media.

This dates back to when I lived in England and had Broadband from BT.

When I left my ex-wife kept BT and hence I was able to keep my e-mail address the same.

She is now also switching to Virgin so will my bt address cease to exist and will I start having to use @virginmedia.com which I have but never use.

Hoping I can keep BT address as it will be a pain changing all the addresses over.

No your BT should still exist. BT used to be my ISP but when we switched nothing happened to it

I hope your right it would be a godsend if I can keep the same e-mail address.

Remember though that if no-one is paying for the bt e-mail address it can be withdrawn without notice...

Is that likely to happen - its BT Yahoo

If it's administrated by Yahoo it's not that likely as Yahoo operate free accounts, but personally I wouldn't count on it, I never use my ISP email service, I use hotmail and gmail...

Without me being able to examine their server and admin layout I wouldn't know... gimme a minute or so...

It poitns at BT's DNS Servers to they actually handle the emails, looks like they contract out the front end to Yahoo from what I know of how Yahoo operates.

So anyway, they might just not care, but like I said, if something isn't being paid for, it can be withdrawn, and probably without notice.

Guess I have still got it at the moment due to ex having BT Broadband.

Yup, from the looks of things you might be able to keep it by setting up a pas as you go account, I don't know what one is with BT, but I have seen them as pay for dialup connection for a when you use it account.

If I set up a free address with Yahoo rather than BT Yahoo I should retain the features I am used to as I suspect it will be indentical if not similar.

This will save me the hassle of learning the Virgin Media set up which looks totally different in layout.

Reasonable idea, the web interface looses a few features (assuming it's the same interface) but remains similar, or you could access your email using SMTP / POP3 on your computer with Mozilla Thunderbird / MS Outlook etc.

But look into a PAYG account for BT, if it's free to setup and you can retain your email address it's less hassle than changing it on all applicable sites.

I'm in the process of considering moving onto either my own server or an IET alias address...

It is pretty silly of me to pay to use an e-mail address just to make life easy for myself - if it's free with Virgin or others.

Same here, my ISP was BT and I switched just over 18 months ago, and my BT email accounts are still all active.
