Sorry, Falkirk G IS compulsory, F'kirk High is NOT.

Are you sure?

07.22 Dunblane to Waverley
17.26 Waverley to Dunblane

Both omit Falkirk Grahamston

Oddly enough this "Fast" service is a bit slower than when 101s did the "all stations" service back in the 70/80s.

But in those days you could get the 07.10 HST to Edinburgh in the morning from Dunblane...

Falkirk G gets stops cancelled from time to time (does that count); High is comuplsory; Gleneagles isn't; Pitlochry, Kingussie, Stilring and Aviemore are all compulsory. Inverkeithing, Kirkcaldy and Arbroath aren't any more with the (Edinburgh/Glasgow -) Dundee - Aberdeen non-stoppers and the new Edinburgh - Dundee services covering stops skipped by the Aberdeens and Inverness trains

Got me thinking. Which way does the Edinburgh to Oban Sundays service take. If it is high it may be one of the few that don't stop. Edinburgh to Glasgow disruption excluded when a lot of trains run haymarket to Glasgow non stop.

Apart from the obvious like Preston, Newcastle and Swindon, what station suprises you that all trains stop at, or most trains? Like XC trains stopping at Cheltenham or Chesterfield...

Lewes on the East Coastway, perhaps? Or maybe Banbury and Leamington?

What about Ayr?

I am not aware of any passenger workings which do not stop at Faversham, Margate, Ramsgate, Dover Priory.

I'm sure some East Coast and/or XC emit Haymarket, they certainly used to, but I'm not sure which.

I'm pretty sure that it's only the 15:22 East Coast deaprture from Edinburgh to Glasgow that does not call at Haymarket. Why, I do not know. The next train due through Platform 4 is the 15:29 local to Glasgow Central (4 minutes behind the East Coast train), so I'd have thought there'd be enough time for the train to call there. I've used the train a couple of times before, and it's rather odd passing non-stop through Haymarket! (And a few people have been caught out and ended up taking a rather lengthy detour!).

Oh, and none of the sleepers call there either. But the Highland and Edinburgh portion of the Lowland sleepers do pass through as well.

IIRC platform 4 wasn't long enough to hold a 225 (that's the version I was given anyhow)

I'm pretty sure that 225s can and do stop at Platform 4, and all the doors do open! Maybe it's just the power car and/or DVT that dangles off the end?

Don't think anything passes non-stop through Winchester, Cambridge or Ely (except when HT/GC are diverted off the ECML)

Wasn't saying you were dissing up Taunton, just Somerset would make it difficult for them to get through their land if they didn't (which is why so many trains call at Flint).D
The railway runs on land owned solely by Network Rail, on a railway line that has existed for over 100 years. How on Earth could Somerset council make it difficult for DfT, XC and FGW to run trains on land owned by Network Rail just because they don't call at Taunton. It seems a very strange suggestion and I'd be intrigued to know along what lines you think it would/could happen.

I used to live in Taunton and platform 2 was often busy when there was a London train. I would more question the need to stop almost everything at Tiverton Parkway and Totnes.

I was just saying that taunton is a county town, therefore the council request all trains call there (like Northumberland CC request all trains through there call at either Morpeth, Alnmouth (Alnwick) or Berwick-u-T). Sorry, I confused what I was trying to say, just councils request that they call, or they hold beef with them :D

Before XC redid their timetable only half called at Tiverton P. Strange. Totnes I suppose is for the collection area around it (like Buckfastleigh and Torbay) :D

That argument doesn't hold for Gloucester.

ALL XC services called at gloucester Eastgate, but this was removed due to the vast levels of LC. They then went to central, but as Cheltenham has become the economical and cultural centre of Gloucs 9like Preston in Lancs) they all call there instead :D

Buckfastleigh could use Newton Abbot and Torbay has a rail link.

It shocked me the first time I saw an HT divert via Cambridge. It could be a risk at the time of diversion, depending on what happened, so it's quite admirable. Are East Coast able to make that diversion, because I don't recall seeing it?

York,
Nice city though it is why is it a compulsory stop on London to Edinburgh services.
Worse still the infrastructure in the area is so poor that the trains trundle along for 50 to 30 mph for what seems an age before the almost obligatory signal stop for some little 2 car dmu to get out of the way.

Surely there has to be a better business case for a short 140 mph bypass from Colton Junction to North of York than most of the current HS schemes.
It would seem to be relatively easy to build through the relatively flat vale of York.

At a stroke I reckon you would cut 25 mins off a London to Newcastle or Edinburgh service.
London to Edinburgh services would become first stop Newcastle allowing them to compete with the airlines.

York and the other Yorkshire stations could be served with a stopping service with a second build of Javelin trains, perfectly adequate for a journey of around 2 hours whose superior acceleration would be more suited to the frequent stops.

Suprised me today on Watford Jn, there's one LM service each hour NB and SB that dont call, Northampton-all stations to Leighton Buzzard-next stop Euston. Strange. :D

There used to be a non-stop service from Northampton that was LHCS (86 usually). Today the emphasis is on promoting Milton keynes, & Watford is also served by LMs Crewe service. Looking at the London - Northampton peaks, they are mostly full of people from both MK & Northampton, so reintroducing the "Cobblers" might be a good idea, if only for the peaks.

Back on topic, I vote for Crewe purely because of it's connection for Wales, the Midlands, Manchester / Liverpool etc.

I would rather drive to Totnes to catch a train than use the Paignton branch. Less hassle with connections, more frequent and fast trains to places that are important. Not to mention the fact that its cheaper to park and far less hassle.
