Compulsory reservations?

Planning a trip from Maryport to Norwich on Monday 16th February, changing at Carlisle, Newcastle and Peterborough and returning later in the week using an off peak return.

The LNER leg states " compulsory reservations " which would seem to remove the flexibility? How does this work in reality and does it also apply on the open return?

You do not have to have a reservation for travel on LNER services.
Carriage C on all LNER services in unreserved.
You can make a reservation easily on the LNER website or app (which includes a seat selector) for any LNER service. I would recommend making a reservation, especially if boarding at Peterborough/Newcastle when services have originated from London Kings Cross/Edinburgh as LNER services can get quite busy. If you do make a seat reservation and your plans change you can cancel the reservation and make new ones free of charge.

Make a seat reservation and switch it to coach G (on a 9 coach unit) as that tends to be the last to get filled up.
