On Sunday, our intended journey (2 passengers) was Dumfries 1300 to Inverness 1905, via Carlisle, Glasgow C. and Q.S., then changing at Perth for Inverness.
The Perth to Inverness was announced on train at about 1810 to be terminating at Aviemore "due to a broken rail, and buses would be provided at Aviemore for the onward journey". We duly got out with everybody at Aviemore at around 1830.
No buses arrived, it was cold and windy, we were not dressed for that and at around 1930 decided to abandon our journey and take refuge in the nearby hotel. There was no internal shelter at the station nor any further advice from staff, the train conductor having left by taxi just after arrival. Advice on the national rail website at the time was that no trains were expected to run from Inverness until at least 2200, although in fact I think they started earlier than that. We continued on Monday morning with our original tickets.
The tickets were the return halves of a period return (Dumfries to Carlisle) on Scotrail, advance first class singles with Virgin Carlisle to Glasgow, and the return halves of a first class period return Glasgow to inverness.
Scotrail first said that they would give delay repay for the pro-rata fare Perth to Inverness, then said they would consider a claim for half the return fare Glasgow to Inverness.
Should I settle for that? Thanks for advice.
