Should have paid more attention to the threads: I could easily have entered this by picking a photo from my 1500+ strong photo archive! Oh well...

It's certainly not for me to post someone else's picture in a Competition!

But now that the competition has been judged and won, I'd just like to take the opportunity to let you all see one of my favourite pictures seen on this forum. It was taken by member eezypeazy nearly 5 years ago, showing the fine signal box at Wylam (on the Carlisle - Newcastle line) in the setting sun while an HST is diverted underneath :-

Hope you like it as much as I did.

Dave,

Thanks for linking into that photo: eezypeeazy did wel with that photo.

One thing I notice in the photo - don't know if anyone else noticed this - but the middle bulb on that signal looked to be an LED, and thus different from the other two lights.

Nice looking box as well.

I think it might be a two-aspect signal, with the middle light position just being plated over.

It's a four aspect signal, LED, with the lower aspect giving Red, Yellow and Green indications and the upper indication the yellow aspect for a double yellow - but it needs to be spaced away from the lower yellow as in a 'traditional' 4-aspect signal so that the double yellow indication can be clearly seen.
It's possible this is a converted 3-aspect signal, perhaps?

Very nice photo :)

I very much doubt it.

The aspects don't look very LED like, if that makes sense (they tend to be brighter and made of lots of dots)

Stations Made Easy have a photo of the signal box showing the signal is question and it does appear to be a filament lamp, certainly at that point at least. Also, in the photo, the upper aspect is green, which also suggests it may only be 2 aspect

I don't the Tyne Valley line has sufficient traffic to need 4-aspect signalling.

Wylam is a station I use every now and then (there's a fantastic pub next door!), which is why I said I thought it was a 2-aspect signal, with the middle light plated over. The signal in question is to protect a level crossing.

As it happens, I was cycling past today - so I took my camera along. As you can see, the top and bottom aspects are clearly traditional filament bulbs and the 'middle aspect' doesn't have a shade. The close-up I think shows that the 'middle aspect' has been simply plated over.

Look out for the SL35 light engine replacements. ;)

(Same heads, same lenses. Very difficult to tell if it's an LED signal)
