I think that I might actually have a chance here! Certainly of scoring a few points! In fact, I almost want to vote for myself because I am of the opinion that it is possibly the best one. But seen as it's an illegal practice, I vote for 5. Because I just don't see how one is supposed to take that shot.
Nothing wrong with a spot of confidence. Number 5 is as simple as pointing your camera off then end of Paddington station and zooming in. It's hardly rocket science!
As for entry number 2, I had a sneaking feeling of familiarity, and indeed it was entry number 3 for competition 404-free for all. Why is it always me who seems to upset the apple cart spotting these things? This isn't my way of going about winning, I promise you.

You're not the only one, trust me. I just hope no-one suggests that mine has been edited (I haven't a clue how to do it!). But surely submitting the same shot more than once shouldn't been permitted? I'm not saying disqualify it this time (although its owner can be identified by checking the 404 entry), but alter the rules to cover this starting with 415.

Anyone care to explain how I am supposed to determine whether my camera has this "SLR" facility? And, as stated before...

Its a type of camera, your camera can either be one or it isn't, its not something that can be turned on
An Single Lens Reflex camera is more a professional camera where you can change all the individual settings (and in most cases get a better picture) when compared to a point and shoot where it may have some settings but no where near as many as an SLR!

Guess I have a Point-and-Shoot then. SLRs are too costly for me.
If some people only vote according to who the uploader is then in my opinion they have no buisness taking part in this competition.
A good picture is a good picture (as is a bad one), so it shouldnt matter who the uploader is or if you know who it is....but of course we dont live in a perfect world.

That is not against the rules. Photos can be entered more than once as long as they haven't previously won.
I realise that this could allow people to go back and see who the entrant is, but I don't want to restrict people that much and generally I dont think people would bother trawling through all the results to find out who the picture belonged to! The same goes for photos which have been displayed in threads, they can still be entered. Photos which have been used as avatars are also allowed as long as it is removed for the duration of the competition.
I could put all these things into the rules, but I simplified them some time ago and don't really want to have a huge long rules list again!

I have a very blunt question here, and I apologise if it causes offence. What, if anything, am I doing wrong? I've entered four times, and have achieved nothing. And in some cases I think that mine have been better than scoring entries (including probably three this time). Only four didn't score this time.
I don't mean to be rude, but I must be doing something wrong, if I am consistently scoring nil.

Don't be too downhearted. Quite often those judging don't worry too much about the technicalities of a photo but the subject instead.
Looking at your photo (and believe me, I'm not an expert), I would say the following:
1) quite good colour
2) tops of lamposts chopped off.
3) cropped too close to front of Desiro - give it some space
4) check your uprights - the building in the background looks like it is leaning over.
5) It's Camberley (nuff said - I live about 2 miles from this station!) - get in to a better location (lineside maybe)
6) change your name to Mumrar (only joking!)

I think that railway photography is a really tough challenge, because, while the main subject implies power and motion, photographs can all too easily become weak and static. For me the important aspects are the balance between the subject and the picture - don't let the subject loom, get it in the right place in the shot - and the "story". Mumrar's winner was naturally static, but the "story" that the picture told was more than just a record of a unit at a place. In fact, I would go so far as to say that this is the most important aspect of composition - one picture that still resonates with me from recent weeks was the shot of a barely discernible 158 in the distance taken from a hill overlooking a welsh valley.
But also, as with any creative process, keep plugging away producing what you feel are good shots. You will never get everyone to agree, but so long as you are satisfied then that will go a long way to the end.

It's fine for you to ask and wonder why. Here is myopnion, and I AM VERY analytical of photos I'm afraid. so be prepared.
* Horizon not straight, very ase tocorrect (better to get close when shooting though)
* The lampost on the right is too close to the side of the train and produces a conflict of interest for the eye.
* The shadow from the tree, whilst not your fault, totally destroys the lighting in the photo.
* The light in general could do with being at least an hour later on, the shadow from the gangway door shows this, and that may also have avoided the tree shadow being so bad.
The exposure is spot on, the sky is a good colour and all the colours are vibrant and a good white balance and contrast/saturation too. These elements are the basics you should ALWAYS strive to get correct. The others are all part of developing an eye for a photo.
Remember, quite often it is common for different people to shoot the same train at the same place totally differently. As an example, I know Ferret won't mind the extra plugs lol, but this is taken of the same train at the same place and time.
And that's before you get in to the differet ways of post processing an image (Again, mine then Ferrets shots of the same thing)
That's more than my two pennies worth, I personally NEVER vote based on the train, it's al about the image. I hope my long winded explanation has served to help you understand the voting and what people look for in a shot.
