#5 for me. Hard to spot the crossing at first, but it's there. Most others it's easy to see the crossing, but hard to see the photographic merit. #4 is ruined by the shadows, #6 is lost in the steam, #8 has the signalbox roof chopped off, #10 obiously a grab effort with the car dashboard in shot.

I like the feeling of power that comes out 1.

5 is prettiest, but I don't think it really meets the spirit of the criteria.

I've gone for 5. In total agreement with Mumrar, though I did think the one at Grosmont showed some potential.

I've gone for 1, it has quite a bit of presence.

I couldn't enter for this one, the only level crossing near me is at Furness Vale and a 150/156 really can't stack up against some of these :cry:

I would have gone for 5 but I'm afraid it looks like a tart with too much make up - underneath it all there's probably quite a nice photograph but it looks photoshopped to hell and back.
Just my opinion.

5 is a very nice picture but its becuase the level crossing is so hidden it makes it kind of pointless in this theme imo.

5 for me, anyway. It's got everything going for it - good location, good composition, good exposure, and good editing - an enjoyable shot to look at!

what about picture 5 do you suspect is photoshoopped? I don't know that much about photography and would just be interested to know.

Is it? I would suggest that Graduated Neutral Density filters have been used, and that was it. But then, my eyes aren't what they used to be - they used to be my ears.

Both 6 and 7 are at Grosmont (Or at least, I think 6 is at Grosmont!). Which do you mean, and what do you mean by "potential"? I'm intrigued!

The one with the gates and signal post. I thought they could have been used to give a new structure to the shot, but somehow the positioning as given does not look quite right.

Its being edited, either by adjusting the levels, or, colour-burning parts of the picture. Also Probably a saturation increase and extra sharpening.

Most of that is acceptable though, isn't it. Many of my photos have curves/levels adjustments and I usually up the saturation a little (not as much as I used to, admittedly). I'm not quite sure, either, what the natural sharpness level is - my settings for sharpness are 7/10 and I usually up them to 9/10. I didn't think that photo was over sharpened.

Personally if you can tell a railway shot is over edited, then its unlikely to be good.

Was that taken in high speed mode with rapid-fire or whatever it's called, or did you just get lucky? Everything worked very well - the logo on the right and the cab door on the left of the LC lights - it all matched brilliantly. Well done.

Re my entry (No 6 - "Lost in steam") - In the thumbnail, it was fairly lost in steam, but I thought the pic when viewed at full size had about the right balance. Was I wrong? I'm not a bad loser, I'm just new to this and am interested in what people look at in a pic and how they choose! Then I can hopefully win one day...

I would dearly love to say that the shot was the result of almost 50 years of photographic knowledge and expertise,but in all truth it was down to luck.I knew what shot I wanted so I simply had to wait for a train to come along.
I only took the one shot - just glad that it turned out the way it did.The shot is straight "out of the camera" - the only adjustment was to resize.
