I went for 4, noting that several are not actually "light engines".
But I do love the impressive new double chimney on 60163 - excellent photograph (for a manual on what to avoid)<D

I'm at odds as to see which entries don't fit with the competition criteria of 'light engines' as laid out in the entry thread
Locos running light engine (not pulling anything)
Will allow for multiple locos in one move, stabled/stored locos do not count
Entries by 1900 next Sunday please

2 - looks gorgeous, and I'm pretty sure I know who took it too!

I too would very much like to know which particular images do not fit the criteria laid down in the entry thread.
Perhaps Oswyntail will enlighten us with a further statement. ??

#5 is very good even though it has a fine pair of ''chimley's'' growing out the boiler. However #9 gets my vote, belting composition and technically spot-on IMHO. 9.5/10 matey!!

Sorry if I've annoyed. I mis-remembered the bit about multiple in one move as "Not" that. But one engine dragging others isn't "light" surely?

Oswyntail, I think you'll find it is. For example, the 87 drag featured on there would be running as 0Z87 - the key being the headcode starting with 0!

Spot on there by Ferret so If you can confirm it as an 0z?? move then it counts for example the recent long distance steam engine move ran without a support coach so gained an 0Z?? headcode rather than 5Z?? (the 5 is a pure guess).

Quick off topic question ....... okay you can get OZ?? but can you get headcodes such as OY etc?

On a train somewhere in Europe
You can get headcodes with most letters, some examples seen relatively recently

0Y05 = to Dollands Moor
0Y12 = to Hoo Junction
0F03 = to Acton Yard
0F70 = to Old Oak Common (RIP)

A light engine going to work a train usually takes the same number, for example a loco for 1S25 would run as 0S25, similarly a light engine in lieu of a train with no traffic, for example 6M41 would be 0M41.

In some places you can run up to 10 locos together, they would still be class 0 though.

Your steam engine without a support coach would run as class 0, and they are class 5 with the coach in tow.

The Z part of a headcode more often than not applies to altered paths, short term notice moves etc.

Yes I get what you're saying. But to my literal mind a light engine must be running light, that is without any load at all. And that is what presents the photographic challenge, as you don't have the perspective of the length of train to play with to add interest.

I think I mostly agree with this sentiment. Then again, we often used to refer to 'a pair of light 37's' when we were kids, but usually both engines were in power, having just come off a freight.

I think one loco dragging one or more other locos constitutes a train, not a light engine service, and therefore, as Oswyntail suggests, should be outside the scope of this competition.

As I set the terms of this particular competition, next time (if there is a next time!) I will be a bit more specific such as 'Battle of Britain Class 4-6-2, running on the mainline, hauling a train of at least two vehicles and not being hauled itself, with a driver who is left handed and has a gold tooth, between the hours of 9am and 10am in summer sunshine, on standard guage track (4' 8.5"), with MY CAMERA!!!

<sigh> Mine's not a winner (as ever!), looking at the other photos competing with it!

Anyway, I very much like both Nos. 2 and 9. I think, though, that No. 9 is the winner for me - love the curve of the track, railing in foreground and beautiful rich maroon of the 'Western' against the wooded backdrop!

A "Light Engine" is defined in the current Group Standards Rule Book as a loco either in singular or in multiple.

It makes no mention that the engines have to be running on subsequent locos.

I am suprised that there is such ambiguity over such a normal railway operation.

Well, every week we either get complaints that everyone's an idiot for picking the 'wrong photo'. Or that x y and z don't fit the theme. This week was clearly the turn of the theme argument. To turn what was originally said by Oswyntail around, the shot he voted for was a shunt and not a light engine move. Let's all have a debate on whether that is a correct statement or not?

One of the only times a light engine doesnt run as a O code is when it is going to assist a failed train. It normally runs as 1Z99 ( well it used to anyway).

That just happened last night. 56311 burst on a working to or from Dollands Moor, 47727+739 ran out to assist as 1Z99. The train assisted continued on 420min late with the grid requiring a wheel skate

Honestly I really don't even see the point in full on discusion okay fair enough we can talk about the mechanics of the OZ and whatnot but im quite surprised that railway enthusiasts cannot agree on what "Light" means.

Personally to me if I were to think deeply about it I would say it was a short version of the statement "Light of load" basically A posh way of saying it has no train.

The trouble is, in my view, what is the definition of a train?!? I reckon that it is something that is being hauled by a locomotive or locomotives, so one loco dragging 3 others is a train - the 3 locos are being conveyed by another loco just as if they were freight.
BTW, I am excluding multiple units in all this!

Ho hum. At least Steam should be fairly unambiguous!

Fair opinion there mate.
I think when it comes to loco's in multi it boils down to preference as me for example if it doesnt have a coach or wagon behind it I would count it as Light.
But on that note I guess we can just say that people will have to agree to disagree and just vote for what they feel does the title justice.

What about steam heat - would a shot illustrating that count ??
What about a shot of a Fireless loco - any good ?? :lol:

I think these comments illustrate just how difficult it is to describe something unambiguously in just a few words!:roll:
