lol it always amazes me what people vote for on this forum. Number 1 is the best photo, shame about the person to the far right which subtracts from it.

Best meaning what, exactly?

There's no doubt it's high quality, but for me it doesn't reflect the "old and new" theme enough. Entirely judgemental.

Why? Its their choice and opinion. You may disagree with it, but your choice or their choice isnt wrong or right

I didnt say it was, but the concensus makes for a very strange choice in a photographical reference, i.e the better photos in my oppinion and others i know, are generally not the ones which win.

Surely this would mean your choices are the 'strange' ones? ;)

As for me, I think almost every photo this week would make a worthy winner - lots of excellent photos. However, my personal favourites are 1, 5, and 7. No. 1 has gorgeous colours - almost radiating from the image. 5 has a really great composition to it, and while most photographers would be cursing the HST for having ruined their 'bygone age' shot, the presence of the 'modern' train really gives the picture an extra something. No. 7 too is great - I love the 'Scots', and, again, the composition is great - of course, if the '86' had been an 'electric Scot', it would have made the image even more special!

So, which to choose? No. 5, I think - but I would have been happy to settle for either of the others, there's not much in them!

There is a 66 lurking in the background as well that adds to the subtractions.....!!

#4 for me though, simple and straight forward. KISS!:p

1 is very good indeed, 4 is an excellent idea though the execution isn't quite right for me. 5 is an excellent shot and a nice illustration of how important luck can be to a photographer. It's a tough call for me between 1 and 5 but 1 has just shaded it.

I just wanted to say that, although it was fortuitous that an HST came by at that moment, most other photographers put their cameras down until the HST had gone behind Tangmere, but I spotted a potential contrast and waited until they were side by side and executed the photo deliberately - I then took further photos of Tangmere unhindered by the HST:

So, I turned 'bad luck' into a picture!

I disagree - there is a person to the right (wait 10 seconds or crop?), it is a straightforward photo, pretty well exposed, but, to me, it doesn't say anything. IMHO, picture 2 had the potential to be the best photo, but the wrong aperture was used because the 57 is out of focus and the picture looks slightly skewiff to me - otherwise, it had the potential to be a great pic. Picture 4 was a good idea but lighting was a real problem here - the depth of field is very good though. 5 was down to timing just right.

I do agree with your sentiments at one level though and that is that it is not necessarily the best photo that wins - but the one that appeals most - two entirely different things!

The wide-angle lens does not really work when there are so many strong lines in teh composition - unless the skewiff look is what the photographer wanted. I agree that this was a bit caught between two stools

Wow, that's the first time I've managed to avoid collecting a single vote, and I was the only one in that boat too. I take it my 'old and new' take on Tornado and Prince Charles' wives didn't strike a chord. Well done to the winning shot, I liked it straight away, good bit of fortune and you didn't get bowled for the main shot either.

Sorry to dissapoint, not a wide angle lens. Taken on a point and shoot bridge camera. The skewness is probably some lens distortion as it was taken at 28mm. As for the 57 out of focus, could have fooled me :p

Then again. Who takes good photos at 5.30am!

This is a normal visual effect, especially when taken from the floor. It's called converging verticals. It's just like the way perspective makes lines converge on a point on the horizon but on a vertical axis instead. It is more noticeable with wider angle focal lengths, point and shoots can still go out to wide enough focal lengths to do this.

Well then you wait those extra 10 seconds to make the better photo, after all, patience can be the ultimatum for a photgraph.... The photo is good, its different, difference can be key, the technicalities are good and so is the artiste in it.

I do agree with your sentiments at one level though and that is that it is not necessarily the best photo that wins - but the one that appeals most - two entirely different things!

But this is a photography competition.... A contradicting concept then. I always vote for the best photograph, regardless of content, because that is what the competition is about. however If there are two different photos, both of equally good quality, but one has more action, say a 37 going wild ont he thrash, then clearly im going to vote for that one.

So, given the choice of a mediocre photo that fits the theme perfectly, or a really good photo that doesn't really fit it at all, you'd go for the latter because it's a better photo?

If it was just a photography competition, then it wouldn't have a theme each week. But it does, so generally you have to try and find a middle ground between the theme and the quality of the photo.

But isnt that why the theme is moderated. I.E if it dosent fit the theme, it wont be enetered... wakey wakey.

The theme may be moderated, but opinions differ, and something that one person feels fits the theme, another person may not.
ie, I don't think number 1 fits the theme, because the locos are around the same age, it's only the liveries that are from different eras, so despite it being a good photo, I didn't vote for it, but for one which is in your opinion a worse photo.

Your opinion isn't law. Just because you think number 1 is the best photo doesn't mean it's the best photo in the context of the competition, and the results have shown that the majority who voted this week don't agree with what you think.

Jesus enough with the Oppinion stuff, we know what oppinions are, and what they play in society, we all know that we all have oppinions and non have a law. The whole reason i posted what i did was because like you say the majority of people vote for certain photographs, which are an obscure choice, and yes i know thats an oppinion, so dont take it to heart.. Mybe there just isnt enough quality photos... again thats an oppinion, so no need to remind me. x

I agree entirely with these comments.

Sorry, but honestly I am finding it difficult to see what logic, if any, there is in this paragraph.

Best in your opinion.
I agree also, but your opinion is just your opinion. Not surprising I have to admit that you're just as arrogant here as you are on the 28DL forums - that said, you fit in nicely over there, shame you stick out like a sore thumb here ;)

Ouu check you out, your fast.... :)

I'm actually not an arrogant person, just sometimes, i dont take easily to the fool, which may be a con, or a pro, i dont know. One thing i do fail to understand though, why is it a shame i stand out? Its not as if I'm not trying to hide from someone...

I was being sarcastic dear. I mean in a community of friendly folk here, you just dont fit in. You fit in a lot better over at 28DL where folk seem to think they reserve the right to arrogance and rudeness (specially towards new people) just cause you got into some power station or something.
