It's not very often I comment on pictures in this competition, but Number 1 really does stand out from the crowd... brilliant!

Um, I didn't vote for number 1, I went for Number 9. It seems like people voting for the content of the shot rather than the quality. Number 1 is a good photo, but it's not great, there are better. The lighting is very poor on Number 1, you can barely see the train, it seems most people are just voting for the copious amounts of clag. Its OK, but not the best there.

Agreed, for that reason 11 gets my vote. A nicely composed photo. However I might add the contrasts are verging on the limit of excessive!

It may not be the best in terms of composition and all that jazz, but I liked it the moment I set my eyes on it. Nothing else had a chance after that. Sorry but that's just the way it goes.

Nine gets the nod for me, wonderful combination, nice lighting and location. I'm going to join the constructive crticism for number 1, were it not for the ckag, the composition is not spot on, and the exposure is too dark, probably due to the cameras AE rather than the photographer

At the risk of covering ground that's been well trodden in the past,it's not overly clear just what the yardstick is when judging a picture that's been entered in the competition - it could be composition, exposure, picture quality (however you define that),or any number of technical issues.
Then again there are pictures that just stand out because of what they convey.Whilst not liking the photo myself,I have to admit that picture 1 has that quality.Yes,technically it isn't very good, and you could run up quite a long list of what's wrong with it,but I think Techniquest summed it up very well indeed - it's got the wow factor.
Oh for the chance to get a shot like that. Oh,and just by the way,no,I didn't vote for it,but that's another story.
