13 for me!! Brilliant photo, and incredibly sharp and crisp in full view.

Not overly impressed with the entries this week. Too many people seem to have picked any old photo. While they fit the theme, they are they same sort of "album filler", with no imagination used that you see on quite a few fotopic sites. Only about 4 or 5 of the entries caught my eye this week, I shall decide which 1 to vote for later.

I went for 9 but could have easily gone for 1 or 13 as well.

'greed.

Gone for 3. People dismiss it coz it's not English. But it is as good as any of the others.

Let's have a look at them - the theme is Photos From The Platform,so that's pictures 13 and 14 out of the running. It's been established that all photos should include a train unless specified otherwise,so that's 7 and 15 ruled out.Number 5 is way too blurred, and whoever took number 10 couldn't even be bothered to remove the bottle.Looks like we've cut quite a few out - I like the idea of number 12 but the poor exposure lets it down.At least thats cut the choice down to 11 pictures !!!

It's station shots not platform shots so that 13 and 14 back in the running.
Also it doesn't have to involve a train as it says Station shots not train in station shots so that's 7 and 15 back.
I know you trying to give a comprehensive critique on the photo's but please either read the full details or even ask.

As for my own opinion I would say that 3 is nice and clean and well set out.
7 defiantly has atmosphere 13 has all the hallmarks of the photographer who took it and that alone deserves credit.
Generally all are good and even those that lack in the quality of shot make up with quality of theme and the captions.

So either 7 or 13 for me.....

Perhaps it's me but Station Phots - phots from the platform seems to indicate that the picture should be taken from the platform, and not the associated bridges, buildings and the like.
Should there be a train in the photograph - yes - this was mentioned only a few weeks ago but obviously the point was missed by a few people - unless otherwise specified all pictures must include a train.
It's never been my intent to give any critique per say although at times it's very tempting, and I have to say that by reading the full details I seem to have a better understanding of just what is required.
As I mentioned in a previous post I think the wonder of this contest is in the wide diversity of shots, both in ideas and in quality.

Along with the approval for voting last night there was a change to the rules (effective immediately) which reverses that now so photos do not necessarily have to contain a train unless the title makes it clear it must. This is stated in the 'Competition Rules' sticky.

Change of rules noted but the post went up at 19.40 - after the closing time of the competition, which clearly means that the original rules apply.
I'll take another tablet now...:)

That means loads of mine can now be considered for these competitions - I'd previously ignored anything without a train in it because they didn't belong. Wish I'd known sooner...:D

Blimey, no need to take the competition too seriously ;)

The whole idea of the rule change was to allow greater flexibility, some excellent entries without trains have been seen in the past few weeks and I think it would be a shame to exclude them!

When I say giving a critique I mean this in a nice way as in basic constructive criticism which is never frowned upon and always needed.
I just feel that photos shouldn't be written off because of rules that are not clear (well until now) or in the case for bridge shots general points of view (which you obviously are entitled to).
I just feel that maybe with you way of considering what counts or not you may be holding back your opinion of what looks the best with your opinion of what is correct and in the world of photography as you will definatly know it is always about what you feel looks best.

If you don't think the photo fits the theme, don't vote for it.

The fact is, the photos are there whether you think they're right or not, so can we just forget the rules and vote for the photograph that inspires us.

Hey Phoenix - it's good to know that whilst we may not agree totally at least we're on the same road !!!
As I seem to be in a minority ( nothing new there ) regarding rules and interpretation I'd guess I'd better - go with the flow as they say.

Some people prefer strict rules with clear specifications about what is and isn't allowed, others prefer the rules to be more flexible (I prefer the latter as it allows for a greater number of entries!)

If you are one of the former, I can but apologise!

Cheers

Just as a point of interest - how flexible are the rules? Do they bend a little, or do they bend a great deal? I've tried with my entries to stick to what the title, and the rules as I understood them, seemed to be looking for - and seen other photos allowed through which I would have immediately cast aside as unsuitable. I have to admit I have felt a little miffed at some of these, but would be interested to know what is acceptable for future reference!;)

Most things will be accepted as long as they aren't far off the specifications, if people don't think it matches the theme you'll generally find they won't vote for it anyway :)

But, if someone entered a Class 47 to a competition entitled "Class 37s" that would not be allowed in!

Thanks for that Jordy - I'll look forward to a bit more creative thinking in the New Year. Many thanks to you and your colleagues for running these by the way - it must be a thankless task most of the time!:D
