Comparing Different Actively Updated Forum Softwares

Besides Xenforo, there are also other forum softwares that are still being regularly updated, like phpBB and vBulletin.

phpBB's most recent version is their 3.3.x branch while for vBulletin it's their 6.1.x branch.

How do the latest versions of these softwares compare with Xenfero's 2.3.x branch?

I find them all broadly similar from a user point of view.

I used to set phone/vbulletin forums up and skin/theme them. Thought I was rich when I was 15 having money coming in like that! In reality the rate of pay for freelance PHP work is not great.

Do you know why RailUK Forums switched from phpBB to Xenfero? What was the reason for this change?

RailUK Forums switched from vBulletin to XenForo, not from phpBB.

Both are paid software.

Why exactly do many prefer Xenfero over vBulletin and phpBB? The modern versions of vBulletin and phpBB are just as mobile friendly and up-to-date as Xenfero.

At the time we changed (when vBulletin changed their licensing model, and also made the new version tangibly worse) Xenforo was the best option available to us for our needs (taking into account ongoing pricing, security, ease of building an equivalent theme etc). We've been happy with it since so have no reason to change again.
