Jaguar were burned in the past by going for diesel engines in a big way, and I can see that it's difficult to predict the shape of the consumer market many years in advance. I myself remember going to a Jaguar garage in about 2011 and asking what second-hand petrol-engined cars they had, to which the answer was "none". I was about to scrap an old Jaguar and I thought I'd buy a newer one to replace it. But not diesel - that's just me. The garage is no longer a Jaguar garage, I didn't buy anything from them, but I did end up with a 5L petrol-engined Jaguar in the end.
Now they're on an electric/hybrid kick, so it seems to me that they want to have good supply when that market reaches some kind of tipping point, it's bound to happen but I couldn't predict when. I'm pretty sure I'll never buy one, unless petrol becomes too hard to source, but I like petrol engines, and always have done.
Land Rover seem nice, but are far too expensive for my needs, two of us have one car which we probably drive less than once a week, and we're not going to replace it until it starts getting unreliable - it's a Golf R with a few years but only a few miles on the clock.
