Commuting from Glossop to Manchester

new this forum - am considering moving to Glossop, and commuting to Manchester by train.

Having spent 12 years in London /SE and had the constant worry of getting on a train let alone getting a seat, i just wondered what it is like getting the train from Glossop. I'm assuming because it's the end of the line it shouldn't be a problem? But what about return leg from Piccadilly?

I'm assuming any other mode of transport to commute (ie car) would be a definite no-no?

You'll get a 3 car 323 with 3+2 seating. That's the best you can expect for a commuter service in to Manchester.

Be aware that most trains are Manchester Picc-Hadfield-Glossop-Manchester Picc, so the people from Hadfield will already be on the train when it arrives at Glossop, but you'll get a seat in the morning. I'm not sure how busy they are departing from Piccadilly in the evening, but I would think that the only chance of you getting left behind at Piccadilly under normal circumstances is if the previous service was cancelled. Stockport and Warrington bound trains are usually the ones that are most likely to leave behind passengers.

I've not seen what that route in to Manchester is like on the road, but the M60 near Stockport moves at under 20mph at peak times.

But for monthly and above a Greater Manchester TrainCard is cheaper £78-00 per month, £747-00 per annum

Thanks for all your advice (and also the details on ticket prices!)

I knew vaguely about the Glossop - Piccadilly prices, but wasn't even aware of the GMTrainCard, which is really good news (and slightly cheaper than TfL's equivalent!)

Even with a 3 car train, I presume it doesn't get too full by the time it leaves Glossop in the morning rush hour? (I'd read somewhere that Glossop was the busiest station on that route, outside of Piccadilly of course!).

Saying a 3 car train might be a bit misleading, as a 3 car 323 is bigger than a pair of 2 car 142s with 3+2 seating which also appear on commuter services in to Manchester.

Glossop does get almost half a million passengers a year (plus the ones with GMPTE tickets that don't get counted), which would make it a busy station, considering the level of service.

You should always get a seat from Glossop in a morning. Trains which arrive into Manchester between 07.45 and 09.00 are generally standing room only for the second half of the journey, you certainlly won't have any room to spread out.

Evening rush hour seems to be more spread out, although you do get more travelling as pensioners can use free passes, if you arrive at the train within the last 5 min before departure you may well not get a seat, but will rarely have to stand for more than 15 min of the 35 min journey.

There is generally no problem getting a seat outside the 'normal' peak hours.

As said earlier the only time you won't get on the train is during service disruption, where earlier trains have been cancelled, but generally trains are pretty reliable on this line with trains every 15-20 min in the peaks.
