Also, the one at Boundary Park, Oldham, has been taken by someone else. Can't recall off hand who by though, though I recall it being empty for a little while

Is that where Oldham FC used to play - Boundary Park rings a bell

Many years ago, I needed a new TV after a burglary had relieved me of my old one.

Comet had the one I wanted, but not in stock. They said I could collect it in a few days (apparently they didn't deliver TVs). They also spent an ridiculous amount of time trying to sell me an additional warranty which I didn't want.

I returned two days later, still no TV. Nor the next day. Asked to speak to the manager, but apparently he didn't work Wednesdays. I decided to visit Currys on the way home, who had the same TV for about the same price, but decided to give Comet one last chance.

Next day, still no TV at Comet so I cancelled and went back to Currys.

They let me take the display model home there and then, and said they would deliver my TV in two days and pick the display one up at the same time.

They also asked me if I wanted the extended warranty but when I said "no", said "yes it's a waste of money isn't it".

I have never bothered Comet with any business since then, and with customer service like that, was never really suprised they didn't survive :)

I found Comet to be very good at dealing with older parents who don't know one end of a TV from another. On at least two occasions I've sent Mum down with what she wants to buy written down. The staff have found it, packed it up and carried it out to the car for her.

Currys was good but they used to ask a LOT of questions, where do you live, what's your phone number, do you like pink elephants and lemonade (Ok I may have made that last one up!) but it got very scary when I returned a broken gas hob and they knew more about the purchase than me.

They also had a very interesting attitude about how customers pay for their goods. I bought a VCR in there on a 6 months interest free deal. I went back in after 5 months and 3 weeks to settle up and chose to put it on my credit card, bearing in mind I'd then have another 56 days interest free and additional protection under the Credit Consumer Act. You can therefore imagine my shock and surprise when the manager refused to take it saying 'debt can't be settled with debt' and demanded I go to the bank and draw out cash to pay it off. I never went to that particular shop ever again.

With the demise of Comet I now buy my electricals from Richer Sounds, you may pay a little more but the customer service is tip top, they also know what they are talking about and how to explain it to the layman or woman. They even refunded my parking fees.

Comet hated selling anything for cash at one time. They wanted everyone on finance, or an interest free scheme (when they did them - which were actually pretty good) where they could still get loads of money because at the end of your payment - you were offered a cheque for £nnnn and the ability to pay it off by simply continuing the exact same payments you were used to. Obviously now with interest!

I bet loads of people took up the offer without realising they'd get very little money for a very long payback period.

I can't believe I had to argue to pay cash with a sales person that got quite aggressive, after already being refused an extended warranty. I actually expect he was considering refusing to sell the TV to me!

Thankfully I did in the end, and this was long before the likes of Amazon or other online retailers.

That's what commission does to people ;) I went to another store of the chain I work in and a member of staff essentially had the mindset of "If I can't sell you the add-on, I'll say the item's out of stock so you can't buy anything, therefore my percentage goes up"! ...of course, part of the scheme involves hitting sales targets, so now every time I see that store in the charts with a slightly low sales figure I wonder if the customers are being pushed elsewhere in a desire to have a high percentage of add-on sales! *shrug*
