Comet 1 Year On

I tried to resurrect the old thread on Comet but it was closed.

The store near me on the Central Retail Park in Falkirk is still there unchanged and unused since it closed just before Christmas last year.

Have any of the other stores near to members been utilised for another purpose or are they still standing empty and unloved ?

Would be interesting to see the fate of Comet Stores in other parts of the UK.

Matalan moved into the old Exeter one last month. Their old store (smaller then the new one) is now empty - will be interesting to see who goes in there.

The one in Hatfield (Oldings Corner roundabout) changed last month to become a Pets at Home store. It had remained empty with the old Comet branding up until a few months before.

EE still have a number of shops they intend to close following their merger buy haven't done so if they're still tied in to a lease.

Up at Giltbrook, the signage has gone down, so it looks like some new tennents are moving in. Not sure who it is yet.

Yes, after an excursion past the site on the way to my parents yesterday, I can confirm that it is now a BM Bargains store.

When Zavvi went under HMV acquired a good number of their stores in an act of complete corporate stupidity. It's good to see that DSGi didn't do the same thing; but the clock is certainly ticking for them.

I suspect we'll see HMV back in administration before too long. Their stores are notably quieter now than this time last year, and they've actually given up trying to do a compelling web channel. Doomed.

Ref Dixons, when you say the "clock is certainly ticking", have you got some insider information?

Or is it just a gut feeling that anything other than virtual shopping must be "doomed"? A feeling shared to some extent by myself but discounts the fact that humanity seems to like "shopping in company" or maybe it is a strong impulse to be able to "handle the goods".

I know that in the last two years Dixons share price has been a stock-pickers dream, having risen from 10p to 50p (and now at a five year high).

I buy white goods online, as they're so much cheaper. I've used Boots, but forget the company name behind it (which operate for other big names too). Good prices, cheap delivery and installation, plus the removal of the old unit. Booked delivery slot. Job done.

Trends in consumer electric purchases. Dixons are now more or less the last man standing and are enjoying steadily increasing amounts of a pie which will soon shrink rapidly.

Their ability to survive will hinge on their ability to compete online (which in fairness they don't do a bad job of) and shrink the importance and cost of their retail offering.

Are they competitive online now? I've not looked, but I know that when I've tried to order before when something is in high demand, their system falls over to the point where you can put an item in the basket, get all the way to making the payment and find it's disappeared and gone out of stock.

Surely a company like DSG could build a system that ensures something you've put in your out basket is protected?

As a result, I've not been in the slightest bit tempted to buy online again. I have, however, panic bought things in a PC World when something broke and I needed to get back up and running quicker than even Amazon could manage.

Also, the one at Boundary Park, Oldham, has been taken by someone else. Can't recall off hand who by though, though I recall it being empty for a little while
