People who use the machine in the bank to look at their transactions and spend ages staring at the screen. Then they decide to print it all out. Then they stand blocking access to the machine while they slowly read through the printout…several times.

I’m sure it’s been mentioned before but: anyone who refers to a locomotive as a train. One of my many missions in life is to ensure my children and grandchildren can differentiate correctly.
Even the BBC put out a news article today, referring to 4472 as a train.
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr
On a related note, I understand why it's done the way it is but when browsing a certain auction website for model railway items, the idea of multiple units being categorised as "locomotives" makes my teeth itch!
Also related, when sellers describe items where the real version is unpowered as a "dummy car". This happens with both Driving Van Trailers and driving trailers from DMU sets, and it really grinds my gears! 150s and 158s have a "dummy car" as do HSTs, but 108s* and IC225 sets don't!

*=unless they're a power-twin set, of course!

i’d ban the BBC’s and ITV’s sports programmes- go out there if you’re so interested- and replace them with programmes like play your cards right.
Oh god no, these days Play Your Cards Right would end up being hosted by someone like Paddy McGuinness and would be unbearable.

The use of 'uptick'.
Lots of business language is pointless, with a primary use of trying to make one's nattering seem more expert, but 'uptick' really annoys me as it is just used as a direct replacement for the far nicer sounding 'increase' - ie "There has been an uptick in passenger numbers".

As I get older my tolerance for the misuse of less/fewer is also reaching the 'grimace' stage.

Believe there was a brief reboot of "Play Your Cards Right" hosted by Alan Carr, which was eventually aired on ITV in May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Not sure if it ever got past the pilot stage.

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

Working in IT I see corporate language and phrases liberally thrown around in most daytime conversations with no thought to whether it's relevant or required. This leads me to a specific conclusion; people should be banned from talking to me between the hours of 8am and 6pm

That was probably "Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow".

Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow is a British game show which premiered 30 May 2020 on ITV. Hosted by Alan Carr, the series features reworked and "supersized" versions of past ITV game shows (primarily from the Fremantle library), with each featuring a new "epic endgame".

Usual caveats about the accuracy of Wikipedia apply! :)

People who stand to close and observe you while your accessing sensitive information at an ATM then try and push their way to the machine before you've decided to finish.

The use of the word "So" at the start of an answer to a question, it has rapidly grown to become the normal way to answer questions lately and also extremely irritating.

That's a pet hate of mine, particularly as I have found myself using it that way, as well.

The Shure SM7B, so many youtubers think they are the bees knees when they ain't that special and just look silly in most situations given they are a recording studio mic, get a Gooseneck, lapel or headworn mic. The mic shouldn't take up half the screen and in reality should be as invisible as possible.

Can't we just ban You Tubers and social media "influencers" altogether?

Most of them are talentless nobodys.

The frequent use of the word 'like' in a sentence. I appreciate that in some regions this a part of their dialect and culture but it's so annoying. Also the frequent use of 'awesome'.

The overuse of video on the BBC news website and social media generally.
I don't understand how kids can apparently have no attention span anymore yet prefer to watch a random person sit in a room and say things that you could read much quicker for yourself. And you can't speed read it to look for the good bits, nor just to see whether there is any meat or its just a self important windbag.

The overuse of the word ‘chilling’, as in ‘this will have a chilling effect on our village’s ability to do its shopping’. Chilling should be for something generally frightening, not a minor inconvenience.

Terrifying is another overused word. Often hear (or see) people refer to something fairly average or bening and say "X happened and its terrifying". They must live in a continual state of terror.

Can anyone explain how 'methodology' has a different meaning to 'method', or shall I carry on being irritated by it?

Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methodology) says that although "methodology" is often used as a synonym for "method", in the way that irritates you, it can also mean "the study or description of methods". So the meaning can be different.

I don't think I have ever heard it used in the latter way. It was started by management consultants and project managers who use fancier language as part of justifying their existence, and then copied by those who tend to copy such people.

In an IT context a method is a process to do one thing (it's a term for a non-value-returning function in an object oriented programming language) but a methodology is a set of processes for doing something, e.g. the object-oriented development methodology as a whole.
