Comedic "things you would ban": minor things that irritate you

I am much more of an early-morning person than a late-evening person, so I actually find late September and October a bit depressing as it feels like it takes an age for the sun to come up after I wake up. Thus, I'd make GMT the standard time.

Interesting - I find November, December and most of January (except the last few days or so) by far the most depressing time of year, much more so than February, even though it's often relatively cold in February.

Not only are the nights drawing out fast in Feb, but also the solar noon is quite late, so the evenings are (relatively speaking) lighter than the mornings.

Late September and most of October isn't too bad, by contrast - though obviously you do notice less daylight (and more rain, of course) compared to the summer which isn't so good.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

It may well get darker a bit earlier in the late afternoon, but the hour of afternoon daylight that is "forcibly removed from us" is given back to us in the morning.
At a time that's very much less useful, of course. ;)

Compare how many people are normally out and about on a Sunday morning at 7.30am, to a Sunday afternoon at 5pm, and you can see why I think that daylight at 5pm is much more useful than daylight at 7.30am !

And in any case it's not just "those who can choose their schedules" who would benefit from all-year BST. Maximise the amount of daylight in the 5-7pm period and it would extend the time of year when people could do after-work walks, or walk home from work in daylight, even if on a 9-5 schedule. (I'd agree that if you have a long commute, you're stuffed either way).

I'd actually say the converse, it's actually those who can choose their schedules who are better placed to tolerate GMT, because they can just do everything an hour earlier by clock time.

But while we're at it, to conform to the thread title, I would just ban GMT. ;)
One of the advantages of it being Greenwich mean time is that parliament can choose to have a leap hour and redefine it. The military can keep using Zulu time.

True. So let's redefine GMT as Z+1 and be done with it. Then, I would support all-year round GMT. ;)

I quite honestly forgot it was the day the clocks changed! I still woke up at 0520, which I can't say I was happy about but I got to benefit from the sunshine so I can't complain too much. The Met Office app telling me at 9am it was to be dry until 2pm, only for it to start heavily raining half an hour, now that I can complain about!

With regards to the clocks changing, I almost never notice it. Fortunately my job no longer requires me to be awake at 2am, so it isn't a huge impact. I don't like the evenings being dark so early, I must confess that bit sucks, but it's just part of winter, one has to find a way to deal with it!

The problem I think is that human beings, as a diurnal species, are not really adapted to deal with far northern latitudes and their winter darkness. We came from equatorial Africa originally, from what I understand, where they get 13 hours of daylight every day of the year (12 hours full daylight plus half an hour each end of the day of "light" twilight).

I have spent much of one winter at 40 North and the experience was a good deal less painful, even if you ignore the better weather. Mornings were about the same as southern England but, critically, evenings had pretty much exactly one hour of extra daylight. To me, that one hour makes all the difference, and the effect was to make mid-December seem like late October, even in rainy weather, and late January seem like early March, even in cold weather.

I'd like to ban people who start a forum post with something like "this is getting dangerously close to the kind of advice I charge for" when someone is asking for advice about something.

Either you're happy to share your knowledge, or you aren't. If, through your job, the answer is something you would normally exchange for an invoice, you could just not say anything, rather than make yourself sound obnoxious and self-important...

Sounds like a good way to deal with the darkness fair play! I say that on a journey which will be dark for the first two-thirds of it, and on a day where even in the Midlands sunset is at 16:41. I will be a fair bit of miles north today, so I'll not see that much daylight. All part of the fun of going on an adventure at this time of year!

Where is 40 North anyway?

Do people seriously start such posts on this forum? Hopefully they don't! I agree with you though, if it's financial advice you charge for in your job, then either politely inform the other person you can help them but it comes at a fee (probably best done via a PM) or just don't do it. By all means, if someone has expert knowledge to help someone out, then let them know but there are ways and means of doing it.

For what it's worth, in such a situation where I had expert knowledge on a topic, then I'd be happy to share it with family and friends. I certainly wouldn't be bragging about it in the fashion of the people you describe!

Passes close to several places of note, coming onshore in Northern California, and passes close to Denver and New York, before cutting across Spain, Italy and Greece and eventually passes just to the north of Beijing.

It's interesting that many of the world's most notable locations are close to this line of latitude, or even (if we take San Francisco, LA, Washington and Tokyo) to the south of it.

We are the oddities being so damned far north! All the places mentioned above don't have to deal with such an extreme dearth of winter daylight.

I've never encountered it on this forum, fortunately.

You do get the odd "I have insider info but I'm not sharing it so ner" post. I'd ban posting that. Post it or don't but don't just post to say you know and aren't saying.
Besides, you wouldn't get to have your 'pearls of wisdom' subject to challenge or comment, which is the purpose of a forum.

This is getting dangerously close to the kind of advice I charge for, but really, calm yourself down, it isn't a big deal. ;) :D
(In all seriousness, I do agree with you - if only that reading it makes me feel slightly guilty that I'm not paying to do so.)

I would ban trick-or-treating. Or, to be more exact, I would make it compulsory for trick-or-treaters to be given something ridiculous, like a chicken leg without any meat, or a packet of 38 pen lids, thereby banning people from retreating into their bag of chocolates to hand something to a suspiciously dressed figure roaming the streets.
Thank goodness it's raining here.

Hear, hear.

We spend all year telling kids not to accept sweets from strangers, and yet somehow it is OK on October 31st.

Can we ban teaspoons which have handles so thin that if you use them to squeeze a teabag against the inside of your mug, they bend?

Software companies that arbitrarily change things in order to "better integrate your user experience with the rest of our products*". Yes Microsoft, I'm looking at the change you've recently made to the location of the email/calendar/other options I never use selection bar in Outlook...

Speaking of Outlook, I'd also like to ban the clunky read/unread system on the desktop version. Currently, if I click on an email, it doesn't get marked as read until I move on to the next email. Which means that if I want to read an email then mark it as unread (as a reminder that I need to do something as a result of the email) I need to move onto the next email, the back to the correct one, then click the "unread" button. Which is especially annoying if the only emails I have in my inbox are ones which I want to be unread...

Are you using Outlook on O365?

I don't have this issue with normal Outlook...

How about "news" stories on BBC TV and BBC Radio news bulletins that are effectively just a lengthy trailer for some upcoming (already recorded) current affairs programme?

I think so. It's whatever the university pays for us to have...

PS: it's Microsoft 365 now... :D
I seem to recall this is configurable.
Do you know how? Otherwise I might have to add another thing to the list: people who suggest they might know how to solve a problem but never actually give the answer! :D

Here's something new to ban. Videos that take ages to get to the point. I watched a prank video recently of someone putting a scary mask in their toilet to scare their partner, but it was literally three minutes of just her doing bathroom stuff like makeup and washing her hands before she finally lifted up the seat and we saw a simple scream. Those three minutes of my life that I'm not getting back were not worth it.

My heart sinks whenever I go to the supermarket shelf and find that a product I have purchased for years is now New and Improved. It may be the former, but never the latter, as they find ever cheaper alternative ingredients or suppliers. So let's ban 'improving' food recipes.

I cannot help feeling the advertising copy writer that came up with Banks's Bitter - Completely Unspoiled by Progress, was onto something.

We used to get our cat "new best ever" whiska's catfood. If it was any better than the previous version, he never communicated it.

Can we ban those radio and TV adverts that say "...if you see anything unusual, it could be cancer...", followed by the nauseatingly hypocritical statement "...your NHS wants to see you...".

Oh really, so "my NHS" wants to see me does it?

If that is the case, then why is it so difficult to get a GP appointment, and even if you do manage to get one, they will do anything to avoid referring you to a specialist, in order to keep the waiting list figures down.

Now then, what are the contact details for the Advertising Standards Authority? <(<(<(

You gotta stretch out the video for those sweet engagement metrics and advertisments! It's why so many YouTube videos are ten minutes long despite only having three minutes worth of actual content.

Call centre hold music which periodically stops abruptly before restarting, giving you false hope that you might actually speak to someone.
