Radio presenters who describe a piece of classical music as the accompanying music to ‘the XYZ advert’ or ‘such-and-such TV series/film’. It is a piece of music that has been around for decades, or even centuries: it didn’t just spring to life for some quickly forgotten TV ad or entertainment.

That would look better than the horrible angle the window sill is at....If you ban the window frame, the glass will fall out!
Try a whole house like that...That would look better than the horrible angle the window sill is at....
Thing is, I don't particularly mind that. The whole house is skewed. Whereas at Worcester it's a single window sill, everything else is (pretty much) at 90 degrees...Try a whole house like that...![]()

I used to live in one like that - it had been around for a couple of centuries, and will probably be there in two more. Cob walls so thick that ordinary diy absolutely impossible, which suited me down to the ground.Try a whole house like that...![]()

You are supposed to just put the items back in the trolley or basket and then go over to the shelf on the other side to pack them. If they didn't do that they'd need more checkouts which of course would be more expensive. The habit that Lidl checkout staff have of scanning your purchases and chucking them into the bagging area many times faster than you can put the items in your bags before you are ready to pay.
It really doesn’t speed up the transaction process.
Thats the idea but at my Lidl pretty much no one does this, instead packing at the checkout. You are supposed to just put the items back in the trolley or basket and then go over to the shelf on the other side to pack them. Seems odd, as that's exactly what you're intended to do. They even have big signs now which say "Please pack your savings at the shelf - it helps keep our prices low"Aldi in my experience won't let you take a basket past the till.
Lidl where I live isnt too bad - theres a sizeable "run-off area" after the till and a divider that the till person moves so that whilst one customer is packing their bags, the next one's stuff is being scanned through. Aldi, on the other hand, has a tiny little space next to the till which inevitably accumulates stuff quicker than I can pack it. (I rarely buy enough to justify a trolley, and you can't take the basket past the till so you have to try and pack at breakneck speed)
Something similar happened to me in cafe, I totally forgot to pay but I went straight back and paid. The strange thing was they didn't even realise. My conscience wouldn't allow me not to pay, especially has it was an independent establishment.A couple of weeks ago I inadvertently packed up my shopping and walked out without paying.
No-one stopped me, but when I realised, I went back and paid up, and the staff thanked me for doing so.
I would imagine these days that a lot of people try and sneak stuff through the automated checkouts without paying.

Maybe we should append this to the "..You know you're getting old.." thread.![]()
I have two boxes which fit into the trolly, so as they are being checked they go straight back into the box and into the car.Thats the idea but at my Lidl pretty much no one does this, instead packing at the checkout.
One of my pet hates is people who do their shopping from the checkout queue, holding up those behind.
Another is people who board a bus and don't have their method of payment ready.
Something I would ban completely is chewing gum, the streets of central Bristol are disgusting in places. Close to nightclubs is usually really bad.
Good idea to be honest, though as my Lidl is within walking distance thats what i do.I have two boxes which fit into the trolly, so as they are being checked they go straight back into the box and into the car.
My word does this really happen?!..or people who are at the supermarket checkout, realise they've forgotten something, and expect a member of staff to go and fetch it for them.
More likely they wait until the cashier is just putting the last item through before saying, “Oh, I forgot the luminous gherkins. Won’t be a tick.” Five minutes later they return and ask the cashier, “Where do you keep the luminous gherkins?”. A further five minutes later they come back and ask, “Which aisle did you say?” Five minutes later they say, “Are they on the right or left?” Five minutes later they come back and say, “Do you stock luminous gherkins?”
My word does this really happen?!
Yes it does.![]()
