Hello all

I went today from London Paddington to Winchester. I used my 60+ Oyster card plus a ticket from West Drayton to Winchester and travelled on a train which was non-stop between Paddington and Reading. I did not buy a ticket from the boundary of zone 6 because that can't be bought online. The very polite ticket inspector on the train let me pass but told me that had he been being pedantic he would have told me that I had to use a train which stopped at West Drayton, because the 60+ Oyster card was in effect a split ticket.

I remember (or think I remember) that the rules changed a good few years ago, at least for travelcards. Once you had to stop at the last station before the boundary of the zone you had a travelcard for. But then I seem to remember that that was changed and you didn't have be on a train which stopped at the last station in the zone. I now can't find a reference to that online. Am I right about travelcards? And if I am (a) where can I find the rule in black and white and (b) is a 60+ Oyster card a travel card or a ticket?

Thank you to anyone who can answer this as I think it is much easier to buy a ticket online to or from the last point in the zone rather than schlep up to a ticket office...

Best wishes

Harry

A 60+ Oystercard is considered to be treated as an (all zones?) season ticket isn't it, so as long as the combination of tickets held by the OP covers their entire journey, it's not necessary for the train they use to call at an intermediate station where the OP changes from using one ticket type to another.

That's my take, does anyone else concur?

Thank you!

Now, being a boring and pedantic lawyer I think I may have found the answer to my own question. Conditions of Carriage clause 14.3 (until recently clause 14.2) says:-

Unless Condition 14.1 applies, if you are using a Season Ticket, daily Zonal Ticket, or another area based Ticket such as a concessionary pass, ranger, or rover, in conjunction with another Ticket and the last station at which one Ticket is valid and the first station that the other Ticket is valid are the same, then the train does not need to Call at that station for your combination to be valid.

(their emphasis)

I can see no good reason why a 60+ Oyster, or a Freedom Pass, is not an " .. area based Ticket such as a concessionary pass.." akin to a season ticket. But maybe I am missing something?

The member of staff was mistaken. 60+ Oysters and Freedom Passes are treated as "Off-Peak" Season Tickets for the purposes of Condition 14.3 of the NRCoT, and the train does not need to call at West Drayton for such a combination to be valid.

Such passes are also valid out as far as Reading, but only on TfL Rail services, not GWR.

As a slightly different point for the same circumstance: what is the boundary for 60+ Oyster, and London Freedom passes, on non-TfL NR services: is it the Zone 6 Boundary, or the station marked as the limit (in this case West Drayton), i.e had the OP bought a a ticket from Boudary Zone 6 would he have had a valid ticket between BZ6 and West Drayton?

In this specific case, West Drayton is synonymous with Boundary Zone 6. Though the two tickets are not the same, as a Boundary ticket would be valid on the direct trains from Waterloo to Basingstoke, whereas a West Drayton one is only valid via Slough.

I am pretty sure that the 60+ card would be valid to BZ6. I t is after all geographical and the map extends beyond West Drayton. That is consistent with what I think everyone agrees - that an oyster card plus a BZ6 ticket would have covered the entire journey.

Does anyone know whether that applies to 60+ cards as well as freedom passes? The 60+ validity map here shows the line beyond West Drayton as grey, meaning "National Rail routes where free travel is not permitted at any time". Which is subtly different from the Freedom Pass map here, where there is a dotted line from West Drayton to Reading indicating that they (ie Freedom passes) are valid after 09:00.

But I am 100% open to correction .

The Freedom Pass is valid to Reading on TfL Rail (soon to be Elizabeth line) services. The 60+ Oyster card is NOT valid beyond West Drayton on any services.

Mea culpa. Missed the footnote that says they're not valid beyond West Drayton. Gotta love consistency!

Thank you to everyone who replied for their help. I will have a copy of clause 14.3 available :)
