I really think Tom Moore deserves a special mention today on the occasion of his 100th birthday - what a spirited character! I read he was given an England cricket cap this morning to add to his cards and tributes - it couldn't really be a presentation, but I hope it meant something to him. May he have a few more years yet, and in reasonably good health.

He seems a thoroughly decent bloke and yes I did put some money into his appeal. I would happily pay more through my taxes for decent public services (I said this prior to the election) and the public needs to accept this long term for the NHS and public services.Maybe a wholesale long term decision needs to be made to fund the likes of NHS and social care properly through our taxes.

I think in the case of Tom Moore, he'd had some decent treatment from the NHS (skin cancer?) and wanted to give 'something back', fair play to him. The whole thing then took on a life of its own and raised a massive amount of much needed money. I found it heartening that the old chap had his 100th birthday made today and fair play. BUT, it shouldn't take a centenarian walking up and down his garden to raise vital public funds.

This is not the thread to discuss health care funding models so I'll leave it at the fact that the annual increases that health bosses say they need are unsustainable and health care expenditure would be greater than GDP within many of our lifetimes (if growth remains around 2% on average).

Yes, a fantastic achievement for a chap who was, to the vast majority of us, a 'nobody' just a few weeks ago (and in no way do I mean that disrespectfully). This whole epidemic has certainly shown how much good there is in many people.

They interviewed his local postmaster on BBC 5 Live today and I think he said that they were delivering three van loads of stuff to his house every day.

All the media publicity has certainly boosted the money he raised.

Has he a secretary to open all his mail and read it to him? Has (s)he a military rank? And I hope (s)he can maintain a good social distance from Tom. You can be cynical all you like, but I think this story is wonderful.

Fair play to him - he seems a lovely guy. One of the few positive news stories in the last couple of months.
