Hello, I am 18 years old and am currently at college. I have completed L1&2 C&G engineering courses, but I may not be able to do the L3. I want a career on the railway, eventually a train driver, but in the meantime either in an office/station role or technician/engineering role. Does anybody have an idea on what college course would be best for me to do for a year which will help me get a job on the railway? Any help is appreciated.

Hi Ow3n, I can only advise from an engineering point.
Unfortunately you are in a difficult situation from an engineering point of view, most railway employers ask for a minimum of level 3 qualifications and some mechanical/electrical experience (generally college doesn't count as real world experience) I dont meen this to sound rude or horrible as you may have more knowledge than I'm aware of but you probably wouldn't make it through the paperwork sifting stage.
Your other option would be applying for an apprenticeship but I would think at this time in the calendar year most companies are in the process or have already interviewed for these positions.
I would say apply for anything that has your interest, maybe a shunter role or customer service as you already stated.
Just be warned, every railway job is pretty much highly desirable and these TOCS, freight and network rail really have the pick of people, don't be put off if you get a no, keep applying and use any interviews you may get through, to learn.
I wouldn't say it's impossible to get an engineering job on the railway but in my experience, I would say it would be highly unlikely at the moment with your current qualifications and experience.
But I would still say apply for anything you like the sound of as someone may see something they believe in and give you a chance.
