if it’s the majority, perhaps football itself should be outlawed?

But it isn't the majority. It's nowhere near even a significant amount. Even if a hundred people were involved in racist incidents at football matches every week (which they are not) that would represent a little over 0.01% of the total attendance at the four English divisions. To suggest that the remainder must accept "collective responsibility" for those miscreants is ludicrous. So it is with allegations of racism as a result of Brexit. It was said that those who voted to leave must accept collective responsibility for making open racism acceptable. To suggest that 17m people must be collectively responsible for making it so is just about as stupid as saying all football fans are responsible for the very few racist incidents that occur at matches. More than that, it's insulting to those 17m people whose only crime was to vote in a referendum in a way that some other people did not like.

There may or may not have been an increase in racist incidents since the referendum and/or the General Election, I haven't looked at the figures. But racism isn't acceptable, open or otherwise, and even if offences have increased I don't see any widespread evidence that its acceptability has changed significantly. The only alternative I can see to not ending up with results in an election or referendum that some people dislike is not to hold them at all.

It clearly isn't a "majority".

To give you an idea of how popular football is, when I organised an inter-form football tournament at a school, to take place after school hours, nearly a third of the entire year group (Year 7) signed up. It was open to girls and boys, but most were boys, so the uptake among boys was over 50%. That obviously doesn't include anyone who was interested in football but didn't want to play it, or was unable to play it (e.g. due to injury or disability) or who was not available after school hours.

I do not take responsibility for the actions of other Chelsea fans. That is non-negotiable, whether the likes of Collymore like it or not. (So they can bloody well like it and go swivel)

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

How come? Imagine you witnessed racist behavior towards players or fellow supporters from one or two in the home crowd..you'd ignore it and say nothing to either the offenders or officials?

We are not responsible for other people's behaviour but we are responsible for how we deal with said behaviour and racists should always be called out and dealt with

Really? A very strange opinion. Lots of football fans show signs of open racism. Does that make all fans collectively responsible for their behaviour?

Actually this is exactly what happened in football at grass roots level from the late 80's onwards. Most fans got increasingly sick & tired of racism and hooliganism, and took their own stand, making anyone engaging in this kind of behaviour more & more unwelcome. Now that is not to say it was eradicated, clearly it never was. But football fans at many clubs around the country took it upon themselves to start to oust those people behaving in such anti-social ways.

So in a way, many fans did take collective responsibility & that is how it should be. We are a sum of all our parts.
