Where I can work we can choose to submit either electronically, or by paper.

After a work trip, in addition to needing to claim for travel I might also have to claim for hotel and restaurant bills. At least some of these will inevitably be paper receipts. To claim electronically, I need to walk to the other end of the building to scan the paper receipts, and enter my email address on a fiddly MFP machine. I then need to find a desktop (there isn't one at my desk), login and jump through hoops enabling Excel Macros to submit the claim. Often it throws some VBA exception and fails. I then need to pester my boss to login and approve my expenses.

Contrast that to submitting by paper - simply staple all the receipts to a form, write the total value and date, sign it and then lean over to the next desk to get the boss to sign it. It is significantly quicker. I suspect my company isn't unique in this case either in having a cumbersome electronic method to submit expense claims.

As usual on here, those who don't want something think no one else should be able to have it either :'(.
The proposal was to have the receipt as an optional item to be requested, or not, as an individual sees fit.

Yes - thats my requrst. I just want a button saying collection receipt please :- ) I think the biggest issue is not knowing exactly what the customer experience is going to be at any given ticket machine. I was expecting my usual set of tickets and that’s not what I received and there was no way of knowing until it was too late! I suspect I will get over it but I do like consistency and the feeling of some sort of control

I'm shocked that any Collection receipt is sufficient for expenses given that it doesn't actually show anything of use other than the price of some unknown tickets that were collected on a certain date at a certain station.
My thoughts exactly, not even necessarily issued from the company that the transaction was made with.

The alternatives, and I’ve seen people working for other employers endure them, are often worse. Far worse.

As an employee who is obliged to use a corporate Amex if possible, and who then appends a collection receipt to a claim for the amount interfaced to Amex, there’s a clear audit trail of business use which can, if appropriate, further investigated.

I have been in circumstances where the ability to use a collection receipt for legitimate and pre-approved business expenses has short circuited a potentially long approval process which would have been triggered by providing the full ticket detail.

I find the collection receipt useful to cross check against my credit card account, then shred it. Since I'm employed by myself, I use the confirmation email to claim expenses from myself - my accountant hasn't complained either.

I agree with others though, it's the random inconsistency that irritates. And of course the Southeastern TVM implementation that puts messages on screen that are just wrong is unforgivable. However, I will repeat my belief that the problems stem from those responsible swanning around the network free of charge without ever suffering the crap TVM implementation they've inflicted on the rest of us.

Systems like Concur solve all of this.

Which are great for large corporates willing to sign up to a SaaS service of the kind, and devote the time and effort to a project implementation of it. While I think my employer’s use of Concur is excellent, I can see why many companies wouldn’t want to spend that time and money.
