Through fares are:

Colchester (COL) - Bury St Edmunds (BSE)

Off Peak Day Return (CDR) £17.50 [Valid by any train except those timed to depart M-F before 0845. Rtn same day]
Anytime Day Return (SDR) £20.50 [Valid by any train. Rtn same day]
Off Peak Return (SVR) £21.00 [Valid by any train except those timed to depart M-F before 0900. Rtn within 1 month]

It does not appear to be cheaper to split anywhere, especially not if returning the next day.

The fare that used to be called an "Open" return, now called Anytime Return, is not available for this particular flow, the earliest train you can get on a ticket to return the next day is at 0923 (arriving 1028)

Hope that helps :)

Perfect, thanks for your time :)

As an aside, do you know much about the COL to ROM line? Any tips for good fairs?

Colchester to Romford is priced between £15.80 and £26.10 for a return, depending on time of travel.

Splitting is less likely to work where the journey is on one operator, and for short to medium (ie, not long) distance journeys, on linear routes plus branches. I looked at splitting at Chelmsford and Shenfield, and in both cases there wasn't any benefit on the (Super) Off Peak Day fares. Splitting means you can't get an Off Peak Return (SVR) to return a different day, however I did discover that if you wish to travel at peak time, it is cheaper so split at Chelmsford.

Colchester-Chelmsford SDR £10.80
Chelmsford-Romford SDR £13.00
Total £23.80

A small saving compared to the through SDR fare of £26.10

A small saving is still a saving though so thank you. Oh, and thanks for directing me to this site, it's fab!
