Out of curiosity, why would Colas by HST power cars?

Presumably there are quite a lot of them available currently as well. If one needs a major overhaul then simply bin it off and swap in another? There doesn't seem to be a rush to re-paint them, so presumably they are viewed as a relatively cheap, disposable asset?

The lack of painting will be due to it being a short term arrangement because the NR contract is due for renewal soon.

If Colas get it and decide to use power cars they will no doubt take longer leases on specific power cars. The idea that they will 'bin it off' (where did that awful term come from?) When an overhaul is due is clearly rather daft - power cars which have been sitting in storage for ages can't just be swapped in and brought into service without an overhaul.
