Code Negative

[Mr Spock]

I was on an East Coast train today and a message came over the speakers as follows: This is message fro the train manager, message is code negative, that is code negative.

Just out of curiosity does anybody know what this means.

Would mean nothing to me, we have codes 1,2,3 and 4 but no code negative nor do we have train managers, only crew leaders and train guards.

Could it perhaps be that someone had reported a code and then someone else wanted to report that in fact the code given was a negative and not happening?

I always thought "Code Negative" was equivalent to saying "No, that's not the case" - or similar - as in:

Person X: Person Y, this is Person X, do you have situation Z? Over.
Person Y: Person X, this is Person Y, code negative, repeat, code negative. We do not have situation Z. Over.

Unfortunately, I cannot comment from a railway perspective, but I assume it would be the same.

I suppose it could mean that but i have never been given such an instruction and as i say never heard of it.

Does this come from the whole belief that if people are going to miss any part of a radio/PA transmission, it will be the first word, hence the (for example) practice of saying "Ramsgate, this is Ramsgate" - something is repeated as people are more likely to be listening next time round?

It appears then that it was nothing too important and is perhaps just a one off communication between on train staff.

Perhaps if I ever hear it again I will go and ask on the train.
