I'm sure I read some time ago that the Redhill stop was to be cut from Coastway West services.

Yet I've just booked a ticket from East Croydon to Portsmouth and see it's still stopping at Redhill.

Did I get the whole thing wrong, or has it just not yet happened?

IIRC it's an intended Dec 2015 timetable change. Opentraintimes seems to show they have finished by then:

What you probably read was the proposal in the consultation (and the following discussion) that has been linked to a few times over the past year or so.

Monday to Saturday off peak yes - however Arun Valley trains will still call at Redhill weekday/Saturday Evenings and all day Sundays!

Grrr, why do they have to cut the Redhill stop from everything! It's a useful interchange for those of us from the north downs!

(I'm sure there are good reasons, it's just a little frustrating often having to go to Gatwick to make the change.)

And the timings of the down Lewes/Eastbourne/Hastings services at Gatwick aren't exactly convenient for passengers arriving on North Downs services. :(

Nor those at Haywards Heath for those travelling East Coastway to/from West Coastway, but with half-hourly services and the downside buffet one can cope.

Why would they be, after all it's run by a different company! North Downs should be transferred from FGW to SW, which I have no doubt will be amalgamated into TGSN franchise, thus recreating the former SR again!

Any real evidence for that, or is it just hope dressed as fact?

There doesn't seem to be any discussion of SE being merged into TSGN, and they have the same owner already. There is also some evidence that TSGN is temporary and may be broken up again in the future...

I'd expect that TSGN will be reduced in size after the completion of Thameslink and East Croydon works in 2024. It's been set up as no-one could predict accurately what revenues and costs would be in the massive disruption of the London Bridge works.

If I was a betting man, my guess would be that Southern Metro will be devolved to the London Assembly along with the Moorgate lines. The remainder of Southern, Great Northern and Thameslink would be a new franchise significantly smaller than the current one. It would cover all Thameslink trains, Kings Cross outer suburban and Victoria trains.

As for the North Downs route that should be either Southern's or FGW's. I suspect eventually there will be a London Bridge to Guildford service via Redhill once the Shalford - Reigate section is electrified.

As for the connections at Redhill for the South Coast do not use the current timetable for working it out as the South Coast trains times will be changing in December 2015.

More to the point, the North Downs timetable will change in December 2017 with the change in frequency. However, with pathing constraints at Reading and Guildford, you would expect the timetable to be similar to now for the existing trains.

And in place you get Reigate to Victoria and Three Bridges Thameslink services.

The Three Bridges service sounds good except it will be faster to catch the following Victoria service and use the tube to get to Blackfriars or St Pancras by about 5-10 minutes. Thus a totally useless service for Redhill passengers who will find their off-peak London Bridge service halved to one every 30 minutes as well.

I do like the new Reigate/Tonbridge to Victoria services as it will be very difficult for them to be routed along the quarry line, which the Arun Valley trains are now if they are over 5 minutes late - better reliability

However for a station with 1.7m passenger movements per year I think Reigate deserves at least a second service every hour to London.

Although from a passenger point of view it would be more useful to get a service from the North Downs to London than to Gatwick, but it appears the few passengers using Gatwick get more priority than the thousands of local commuters as ever. Powerful lobby group is Gatwick

That'll be interesting, considering that FGW can't even run the current/existing timetable properly!

Hmm, I'd say that I disagree with that. For the major traffic centres between Guildford and Redhill (Guildford, Dorking and Reigate) all already have services to London. Guildford's are definitely quicker and will be better, so it is only any traffic to Croydon that might use them. Dorking I don't know about timings, but I would guess it will be a similar scenario. And Reigate already has the London service, and unless a London service from Guildford was in addition to that, would see no change.

This leaves the minor stations, most of which don't even justify a service every hour (I know this is largely due to pathing issues) And most of them are rural, and so people would likely drive to them, and so could just drive to another of the many fairly local stations with much better services.

Another Gatwick service on the other hand has significant benefits to much of western England and wales who do very much use the line to get there. This is in addition to the not inconsequential traffic originating one the North downs wanting to go to Gatwick; either because it is a major employment and leisure destination, but also to change for better connections to much of southern England.
