I've recently seen a couple of coal trains on this line - from a distance - think they were operated by Freighliner HH.

Does anybody know their origin / destination / frequency?

It's not coal- its cement I think.

Warrington-Ellesmere Port.

Freightliner Heavy Haul. (class 66 and hoppers).

2 a day (each direction). Don't know what time the early one runs, but the late one runs past Helsby between 2.30pm and 3.30pm.

Best place to view is Ince & Elton Level Crossing or Ellesmere Port footbridge. You'd have to get an earlier Merseyrail service though, because the freight crosses over to the DC rails (therefore blocking the platform), before heading on to the 5mph unsignalled Manchester Ship Canal branch to the cement works.

The other freight through Helsby is the wood from Carlisle-North Wales.

One point how are the cement works boilers fired. Also the logs went through
Wrexham at 1332 on the way back North yesterday using Colas.

There are definitely coal trains between Ellesmere Port and Fiddlers Ferry - sometime pulled by a Class 70. Other freight trains carry gypsum, and also the log train of course.
