If asked if I'm an idiot I usually try to respond that I am not. However I have bought both Hornby and Bachmann coaling towers....Both! This is caused by pre-ordering off mail order sites and not keeping note...as I said an idiot. This means however that I can make a comparison - both are very good. The Bachmann one if ordered through the mail may well arrive in 10 000 pieces so be warned. Hornby is more robust. I am lucky to have space but you'll need a small holding to fit the 4 lane Bachmann into a realistic setting. I usually prefer Bachmann over Hornby and, in this instance,Bachmann provide more for your hard earned. More railings, more steps, more bits and a decent attempt at recreating the wagon lifting mechanism. Hornby does not but it is less expensive, a better colour and does the job.
In summary - for the loot I'd go with Hornby unless you plan to stare lovingly at it for all times and make it the centre piece of your layout - then....I'd still go with Hornby. However if you want to prove you are a complete idiot - buy both.

curses and double curses! My cunning plan to sell one of them to you has failed. You'll be sorry when your trains run out of coal and I am the only supplier of highly valuable coal towers.....mwah mwah mwah!

Fair point. I shall get arty with the camera tomorrow and have a bash...the Hornby tower is in situ on layout whilst the Bachmann sits forlornly staring at me from my workbench....I'll see if I can get them side by side. I'll aim to post them by 7pm UK time.

How about that - a new thing achieved today. So busy loading pics forgot to comment. Pic 1 is the Hornby coal tower - single track sitting in my marshalling yard. Scale is good, weathered concrete suitably grey and miserable (England after all) and breaks the skyline up a bit.
Pic 2 is the Bachmann - to be fair it struggles to compete sitting on my bench but hopefully you get an idea of size and detail. It's very good. Hornby is £ 25/30 cheaper.
My wife just looked over my shoulder as I'm typing and muttered, "I wish you'd put as much time into the house....!" Now why do wives do that? She also just saw the prices when I told her they were cheaper. Why do husbands do that? This could be a long night........
