What's the difference between TSOs and TSs and FOs and TFs, other than that TFs and TSs are used in HSTs?

HST trailers along with other "multiple unit" trailers have the T prefix to show they are Trailers as opposed to Motor coaches which have M. The use on HSTs comes down to the "HSTs are units" philosophy, and goes back to the days when they were officially classed as 253 and 254 DEMUs. Loco hauled stock though doesn't have motor coaches so there is no need to distinguish between them and trailers, so the T prefix is not used.
