G'day everyone,

Back in the early 1980's and before the re-signalling I'm pretty certain that there were three carriages at Newton Abbot with at least one in GWR colours close to the loco wash plant. Can anyone identify who owned the carriages and where they are now?

Any information would be gratefully received.

Kind regards,

Richmond Commuter!

The belonged to publishers David & Charles - their offices were at Newton Abbot I think. Am pretty sure the coaches ended up at the Dart Valley (now South Devon) Railway.

One of them interestingly was an LNER pigeon van and that eventually ended up being bought from the SDR and sent to The Severn Valley railway for restoration, not sure of its current status though.

Many thanks for this. Do you know when it was moved as it wasn't in the museum at Highley during the Spring Gala and I wonder if it's still being restored at Bewdley.

Ah well, it's on lnersvrcoachfund.org.uk. It seems that it went there on 17th March 2005. I've been to the Severn Valley many times and I must admit I didn't realise it was there, I'll look out for it next time though.
My Mum actually knew David (St John Thomas) of David and Charles and the three carriages at Newton Abbot always intrigued me.
The other two I think were ex GWR ones and probably stayed at Buckfastleigh but I'm not completely sure, was one of them a Hawksworth coach? Perhaps someone who's involved with the SDR like Marky T might know?

There's also a large lower quadrant semaphore gantry by the road outside what was their office.

I don't know if David & Charles were responsible for it being placed there; or who owns it now.

It's just a short walk from the station, but not quite visible from the train. Turn left out of the station entrance, walk parallel with the railway, and take the turning to the left over a bridge across the railway.

Looks like this one...

From what I can gather the LNER coach has now been fully restored and is due to feature in the SVR's LNER rake next week. As I'm attending their gala I'm looking forward to seeing it!

That's great to hear, interesting that the subject of the thread is just about to enter the limelight.

And this is a picture of it that I took in Newton Abbot today.

Many thanks for this , seeing as I've only ever passed through Newton Abbot by train I never knew that it still existed and just around the corner from its original location too, must have been replaced during the Exeter area resignalling around 1986?

It can be seen on Google Earth, but only clearly by the shadows the semaphores leave on the ground! BTW, when did David and Charles close shop at Newton Abbot? Sam

November 2010 was the date it seems, relocating to the city of Exeter, although they were taken over from 2000 by a US company (F&W Publishing)
