As a follow up to the posts from Tom B and Nutter, all PSV, LGV and HGV have tacho's fitted and drivers are limited by law as to what the can drive.

The maximum allowed by law is 9 hours driving a day (can be extended twice a week to 10 hours), but they must have a break of 45 minutes after 4 and a half hours driving. The daily, weekly and fortnightly rest periods are a bit more complex, but they can not drive more than 90 hours every fortnight. I'll ask on another forum I'm on, but that is the main part of driver hours laws.

Breaks are correct, but the maximum hours is 15 per day.

rail... much safer.

and why the hell is a coach company running rail? who knows

For the same reason that most UK TOC's are run by bus companies...

Of course, it all gets a bit more complicated when you bring in local service PSV work, where the vehicle doesn't have to have a tacho (and if it does, it doesn't have to be used) and an extra hour is added to the maximum time without a break (i.e can drive for 5 and a half hours without a break).

There's various other bits and pieces of variations to the core rules too, although I understand that they will be scrapped within a few years when EU rules take over completely.
