I was amazed to find a few minutes ago that one forum member had never even heard of 'Oliver Cromwell' and didn't even know it was a loco! Bearing in mind its return to service is one of the most major steam events in recent years, how many other people are so blinkered when it comes to steam and are completely clueless on the subject? :???:

I see what you mean.
I think I know a few things about steam but generally not as much as diesels and well most GWR engines bore me soooo I know stuff but Im ignorant to some of it.

I think being interested in railways is a bit of a journey. Must admit, when I was 16, I didn't know much other than what was about on my local line. I think over the years your interests expand across the country, then perhaps to other countries, and back in history - and perhaps things like trams and narrow gauge.

For some people steam comes later, like it did me. Though I always enjoyed looking at steam layouts in modelling magazines. For others they just prefer steam, others modern. It's an individual thing I guess, I can't help feeling though if you ignore steam you ignore the railway age which ran from 1850-1950, when railways were the most important form for transport and were everywhere, from hospitals to grave yards, from vast industrial complexes to rural idylls. You miss out why they formed, the politics, the engineering, commerce, and design movements and so on. I suppose, it depends if you want to ask questions and look beyond what you can see right now. You don't have to, but it's surprising what things of interest you might find.

But surely the MOST significant steam event is the completion of building A1 Pacific 60163 Tornado from scratch! Now running under its own power and ready for mainline trials very soon. See http://www.a1steam.com/

Interesting for some may be the combination of classic design and contemporary electronics, braking and increased water capacity (to cope with the loss of all mainline refuelling & watering points).

How many people have been aware of this amazing achievement?

As for me, I'm stuck somewhere between a fascination for steam and modern multiple units. I'm still struggling to understand Deltic's engines properly!

Deltic engines? Easy! I'm struggling to see why we are still messing around with piston engines, turbines are the way forward!

Well I cant see why there is so much ignorance about steam. Steam has so much interest and is more enjoyable to watch in my opinion. Its a shame that most people these days are only interested in diesels, but I will respect anyones view.. (Most of the time! )
I like heritage diesels too, dont get me wrong, I'm into everything. But there is something about steam that beats any other type of train. It has character, which most other locos have not.
It would be nice if people could give steam a chance, after all, they were around before diesels.

IMO steam is boring. I like big dirty smelly engines with lots of clag.
