(As we know, pronounced "cubbit". I have a friend who harbours the strange conviction that English spelling-vis-a-vis pronunciation, are phonetic: he declared re this place, that "it's 'cow-bit' [pronounced in manner of 'bovine with item between her teeth']; and I don't care what the local idiots say".)
