Whilst there seems to be a direct chord that allowed trains to go direct from Blackhill to Knitsley, was there also another route that would have called at the Consett station site that was open from 1862 to 1867?

I think the direct route from Blackhill to Knitsley which we took on this journey would in fact have taken us past the Consett (1865 to 1867) station.

I was trying to do a post (extremely wordy, compared to @DerekC's) giving my hazy and incomplete "understanding" of this matter. @DerekC -- thank you: your post above, mercifully makes it possible to knock my monstrosity on the head ! The only sources available to me which make any mention of a Consett "old" or "first" station -- indeed, on the direct Blackhill to Knitsley route, "whatever" -- are the Wiki article: whose map shows a "Consett" station just "south-west" (diagrammatic-wise) of the newer Consett station on the intersecting line; and Dewick's Complete Atlas, which opines that "Consett (1st)" was one of several earlier aliases of Blackhill station !
