I investigated something which has long intrigued me on the next section of route. Just north of Whitchurch the old main road to Newbury crosses above the LSWR West of England main line, and immediately north of the bridge there is fairly clear evidence that there is another underbridge, infilled on both sides so that only the parapet walls are visible. Books on the DN&S suggest that there was a plan (in fact several) for a link with the LSWR here, but simply say that it was never built. In fact the 1895 1:2500 OS map shows very clearly the path of a west to north curve between the two lines, fenced off and with a short section of cutting dug out, from the LSWR station under the abandoned bridge and into the next field. It's good to know!
