I am hoping that the Merthyr, Tredegar and Hereford (per the guidance notes) is another name for the Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny.

This reminds me that somewhere I have a wonderful vinyl record of trains climbing through the Clydach gorge. I must dig it out and listen to it. Sound recordings bring back the age of steam very clearly.
