Can you give the reason for that?

The junction between the Derwent Valley/Blaydon route and the North Wylam Loop was just east of the station. So we could call at the station (which had platforms on both routes) but not arrive from the south and depart westwards towards Carlisle, without travelling some distance down the line towards Newcastle. Hence the idea of reversing at Scotswood Works.
