Hmmm..interesting.
According to my Ian Allan Pregrouping Atlas & Gazetteer, the Melbourne line joined the Leicester-Burton line at a trailing junction just west of Ashby de la Zouch station.

You should know me well enough by now to know that I delight in finding arcane and little-known facts to make some of these journeys interesting..:D

In 1874, the Midland Railway extended its Derby to Melbourne line to Ashby de la Zouch, using part of the line formation of the Tickhill Tramway and for a short period of time, their branch line services used a temporary railway station in Ashby de la Zouch on that branch line which was situated some distance away from the main railway station that was built in 1849.

Nottingham London Road...? which level
I would say London Road Low Level, there was no direct link from High Level onto the Midland Railway. However i believe the Suburban service terminated at Victoria Stn. The link from Low Level was the faintest of links also, looking at this plan from 1902.

Once both London Road stations closed in 1967 there was a direct link to the GN line via the Goods Yard allowing Grantham trains to access the Midland station. I'm not sure when the link was abandoned and services diverted to the MR at Netherfield Junction.

Now if i'm correct the next station after reversal at Nottingham is Thorpe-on-the-Hill

Now taking the Lincolnshire Loop Line, which will be pleasing for a certain forum member.

That confirms my suspicions as I have an early 1900's line engineering map of the area.

Just to hark back to the subject of the Nottingham Suburban Railway, I have just had sight of the "John Speller's web pages" entry on this railway...
He gives the stations served, in the order that our journey progressed as:-
Sherwood
St Ann's Well
Thorneywood
Nottingham London Road High Level
Nottingham Victoria
