This station opened in 1854 and still is open for business. Only closed stations can be named on this quiz, as per the rules in the very first posting.

I will name the final closed station to bring matters to a close.....

Jordanston Halt.....that was the station prior to what is now Fishguard & Goodwick.

This quiz is number 93 so far...

The journey starts at the open station of Preston
It follows the line of the North Union Railway
It then follows the line of the LNWR Wigan North Western to Eccles line
It then follows the line of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway
It then follows the line of the Manchester and Leeds Railway
It then follows the line of the Ashton, Stalybridge and Liverpool Junction Railway
It then follows the line of the Stockport to Stalybridge line
It then follows the line of the Stockport, Timperley and Altrincham Junction Railway
It then follows the line of the Warrington and Altrincham Junction Railway
It then follows the line of the Birkenhead Joint Railway

Now I know this is a current station, but after Farington the next station apparently is Leyland. Is this valid?

I wonder if it is possible to create journeys from a currently open mainline station that ignore any stations currently open on the outward route, but name any closed station en route from there. For the sake of good order, both the starting and finishing station names should be stated at the start of each new leg.For example, if I was to say Manchester Victoria station to start a leg to Hudderfield, the first closed station on a line outwards would be Miles Platting, then the following ones would be Park, Clayton Bridge and Droylsden...but not Ashton-under-Lyne as that is an OPEN station. Loop lines that are closed can still count, provided that both ends abut a current running line.

Stations that were closed....but then re-opened either by a heritage railway or National Rail...are not allowed to be used on this quiz IF THEY WERE CONSTRUCTED ON THE SAME SITE..... Also any station either opened or closed by a heritage railway is NOT allowed to be used on this quiz. A name of a station is acceptable if that name was carried as the officially known name of the station during any part of its existance

Goods stations that have NEVER had any passenger services are not allowed to be used on this quiz

For the sake of new contestants, the above extract from the rules should make it clearer that only closed railway stations can be named on this quiz.

Open stations such as Haverfordwest and Leyland are therefore not to be used.

You also have to think of closed stations that have been on a different site to ones that are currently in existance, as well as other closed stations on a line. That is why some knowledge of railway history is useful when competing on here.

There is one such now-closed railway station to follow on after Farington, but before the one that you have just suggested. That is the next closed station to name. This was on a different site to the currently open station of Euxton Balshaw Lane and was opened in 1905 and closed in 1969. Is that enough information to make the next posting ?

Think I might just retire as most of these stations closed well over thirty years before I was born so I got a cat in hell's chance!

Well it might not all be sad news, I may make an extravagant return! I'm getti g confused with this as there's also current stations on the line too.

You now seem to have grasped the idea. Of course there will be both open and closed stations, but it is only the closed stations that need to be named on this quiz. Just look at the Chester and Holyhead Railway for example, where a view will reveal many examples of both open and closed stations. I was somewhat amused to read your comment about some stations being closed thirty years before you were born. Some stations have been closed for a very long time indeed and on that line, there is a closed station of Britannia Bridge which opened in July 1851 and closed in March 1858, no less than 155 years ago.hock:
