I think the mention above of Conisbrough and Mexborough junction needs to be revisited, as after the open station of Conisbrough came the open station of Mexborough. After Mexborough, I am informed that it is not the case that the closed station of Mexborough Junction preceded the closed station of Mexborough (Ferry Boat) Halt.

You are quite right in that I should have mentioned the open station of Mexborough rather than Mexborough Junction. The sequence of stations along the original SYR line is: Conisbrough (open), Mexborough Ferry Boat Halt (closed), Mexborough (open), Mexborough Junction (closed). In checking this, however, I have noticed something else. The closed station of Mexborough Junction was located at the junction of the original SYR line with the curve which links it to the North Midland Railway line to Rotherham, built at the same time as the original SYR route. On this journey we are to take the MS&L (successor to the SYR) line to Sheffield Victoria, which was built later and curves away southwards just to the east of the original Mexborough Junction, so in fact we wouldn't have passed through it.

I have been in discussions with a senior editor from Wikipedia regarding Mexborough (Ferry Boat) Halt. He is adamant that this station was close by the ferry boat crossing and also the swing bridge over the canal in the area of Mexborough around where the parish church now stands. Both Mexborough (Ferry Boat) Halt and Mexborough Junction station were closed in 1871 when the current station of Mexborough was opened.

He is adamant that this station was close by the ferry boat crossing and also the swing bridge over the canal in the area of Mexborough around where the parish church now stands. Both Mexborough (Ferry Boat) Halt and Mexborough Junction station were closed in 1871 when the current station of Mexborough was opened.

I don't think there is any disagreement here. Ferry Boat Halt was where a footpath, still called Ferryboat Lane, crosses the river and the railway (now by a footbridge in each case). The north end of Ferryboat Lane is indeed about 100m east of the Parish Church. The location of the station (clearly shown on the 1854 map) was about 900m east of the current station of Mexborough, so between Conisbrough and Mexborough. Mexborough Junction was about 600m west of the current station, where the modern railway line enters the southward curve towards the North Midland alignment.

I did wonder about that but the Godley stations history is quite complicated and confused by changes of name. The first station (Godley Toll Bar, closed 1842) was located "near the Hyde and Mottram Road" which puts it close to the current station of Godley - in fact the "Godley Toll Gate" is marked on maps of the 1880s very close to the underbridge just south of the current station of Godley. The second station was Godley Junction (closed in 1995), which had its name changed to Godley East when the current station opened in 1986. So after your posting of Godley East would indeed have come Godley Toll Bar, but since I didn't know exactly where it was and it was clearly close to the current station, I guessed that Rule 4 would apply.
