I'm currently doing a little revenue based project just for reference which includes listing all 2555 stations in the UK but I would like to bring it up to date, how many stations in the past 10 years have closed absolutely to all passenger services and will not be reopened to national rail services also including how many stations have been either reopened or opened in this time period.

I'm not counting the East London Line as being closed as that reopens later this year but I'm aware of the North London Line from Stratford to North Woolwich would count as it's no longer served by National Rail services after all it's got the DLR running over the route.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Newhaven Marine

As far as I am aware, this station is still open, and no formal closure process has been undertaken.

The station was temporarily closed in August 2006 due to safety concerns with regard to the condition of the roof, during this period, the once daily rail operation ran ECS both to and from Newhaven Marine. To replace the rail operation, a taxi service was available to passengers to take them the tiny distance between the Marine and Harbour stations however there is some ambiguity as to whether this taxi service has ceased and the passenger rail operation resumed again or whether the taxi service is still in place.

Another line that officially closed to passengers recently was the Croxley Green branch which had the following stations:
Croxley Green
Watford West
Watford Stadium

The line's closure notice was officially signed on 6 Novemeber 2002 and the last passenger service (in fact a rail replacement bus) operated on 26 September 2003. This was an interesting closure as all the Croxley Green branch stations still appeared within the rail ticket database for a number of years after the official closure and therefore led to their listing within the ORR's station usage spreadsheet. What was even more interesting is that one station on the line Watford West racked up more ticket sales than Gainsborough Central (a station that still receives. a weekly service).

No passenger services use it & the last time the station was used by passengers was in 2002, ECS doesn't count as it's an empty non passenger working.

The OP specifically said "how many stations in the past 10 years have closed absolutely to all passenger services and will not be reopened to national rail services". Newhaven Marine has not had its formal closure notice signed and therefore remains open, as of May 2009 (latest update available), a formal closure process was not even on Network Rail's agenda.

You state the station at Newhaven Marine was last used in 2002 which I am assuming you found on this site (http://disused-rlys.fotopic.net/c1690685.html). Unfortunately that information is wholly incorrect. The rail service continued in passenger operation until August 2006 when it was replaced by a taxi service (equally available to passengers), I know personally of people who caught the service in 2004. Furthermore, a railtour operated to the station in 2005, and a very large group of passengers exited the tour at the station where it stopped for a short break (http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1778915.html). Regardless of whether it has been used since 2002 or not, the station still remains open and there are definitely possibilities for the rail service to the station to resume (which thus renders the station out of the OPs criteria).

Cheers, is there any other place to add to my database?

2,559 stations and counting....

Is your original database based on the Station Usage spreadsheet from the ORR website?

Would the Oldham loop line stations count as now being closed, as they will reopen as light rail? Someone may have already listed them, but I don't know the route

It depends on if National Rail tickets can be used on the services, if not as the case is likely to be then no they would not count, much like the former stations on the North Woolwich branch of the North London Lines between Stratford and North Woolwich would not qualify.

*With the above suggestions taken on board, the number now stands at 2,556 stations. I have removed the stations on the Oldham Loop which will be going to Metrolink but kept these which still have Northern services.

You can include a specified Metrolink zone on a rail ticket, if that counts.

I used to have a season ticket from Stalybridge to Metrolink Zone 4 when I used to work at Salford Quays.

Really? Wasn't aware of that, thanks.

*Blimey, didn't realise there were so many stations open or opened/reopened in such a amount of time!
Hopefully, there's no more stations to add?
