Close shave at Australian LC

This BBC article has an interesting video of a very stupid pedestrian who used a level crossing as a train was approaching. I don't think I've ever seen a closer encounter at a level crossing and am surprised he's survived

CCTV footage shows a man stepping into the path of an oncoming train in Brisbane, Australia, and escaping with his life.


The 20-year-old apparently ignored a barrier and warning bells as the train approached a station.
He was caught on film dashing across the tracks and despite escaping with his life - he was fined more than 2,000 Australian dollars.

You'd be gobsmacked at how regularly people put themselves in this situation. Always a slightly tense moment when you pass another train immediately prior to a level crossing (particularly AHBs).

Bet we'd not do that here. We would argue that the poor man had been through enough already, and possibly support a claim against the TOC!!

Bet we'd not do that here. We would argue that the poor man had been through enough already, and possibly support a claim against the TOC!!

The article said he was "dashing across" but he didn't seem to moving very fast until the train hit him.

Indeed and I always blow up when this happens just in case.

Ditto, funnily enough had the same scenario on a barrow crossing on a tight curve a couple of weeks back, postman ran across in front of me... How many times do you reckon he's done that?...

It took me a couple of seconds to realise you meant sound the horn - I'd a vision of you exploding. Like when it's announced that "this train terminates here", I have a vision of the thing going up in smoke after everyone gets off. :

Once is too many. Might be saving a few seconds but next time he might not be so lucky.

True story about this (which I may have mentioned before): he broke his ankle badly, and the BTP reviewing the CCTV later that evening realised this. They visited the local A&E and asked if anyone fitting his description was there with a foot injury. The sergeant was escorted to the relevant cubicle, where he presented the miscreant his trainer back with the words "Cinderella I presume?"

Trust me, that goes without saying. I am extremely vocal about this sort of thing and never hesitate to call it in. I don't know if I've been unlucky in my career but I think people would be shocked if they realised how regularly people misuse level crossings.

Once is too many. Might be saving a few seconds but next time he might not be so lucky.

Luckily the other two on my side of the crossing that came into view one second before I reached them at 50mph thought better of it...

There was one up here a few days ago - luckily Metro services can only go 15 kph across open crossings so the risk of hitting someone is much reduced.
